Three ways Robson Robinho can improve Mohun Bagan's attacking threat

Mohun Bagan signed Robson Robinho as a replacement for Greg Stewart.

Mohun Bagan have managed to add a lot more firepower to their frontline with the signing of Brazilian winger Robson Robinho ahead of the start of their 2025-26 AFC Champions League Two campaign.

Following their shocking loss to East Bengal in the Durand Cup, the Mariners were forced to accelerate their attempt to sign Robinho and have brought him into the squad before the beginning of their Asian journey.

Fortunately for Jose Molina, he is receiving a highly talented player who can be an absolute tormentor for the opposition defenders. Robinho normally operates on the left wing but can possibly adapt to the needs at Mohun Bagan to get the very best out of his new teammates.

There are, however, a few of the Mariners’ players who can particularly benefit from the arrival of a chaotic forward like Robson. Here, we look at the three Mohun Bagan players who can potentially benefit the most from Robinho’s signing.

3. Sahal Abdul Samad

How Sahal Abdul Samad can be the wild card to help Mohun Bagan seal ISL shield championship?

Sahal Abdul Samad was one of Mohun Bagan’s better players at the 2025 Durand Cup, getting many key goal contributions in the matches. He appears to be ready to play in that no.10 role or an attacking midfield role if necessary for Mohun Bagan, and now the Indian midfielder gets a tricky teammate who can connect with him on the pitch.

Samad can have a lot of fun playing with Robinson, with the two being hard-working, tricky players who can use their one-touch football style to create some innovative attacking moves.

Moreover, Samad can also now make clever off-the-ball runs into the box and expect Robinho to have the awareness of feeding passes to him in the key spaces in the final third.

Sahal can probably enhance his goal contributions prowess with someone like Robinho beside him, as the Brazilian winger is capable of moving into the empty spaces in the danger zones and give Sahal the opportunity to feed him into prime scoring positions.

2. Jason Cummings

Jason Cummings was one of Mohun Bagan’s best players in their 2024-25 season, having 13 goal contributions (seven goals, six assists) in 22 games in the ISL.

Cummings was able to prove himself as an expert in playing in the no.10 role, and actually excelled in playing just behind Jamie Maclaren in the system. There is a strong possibility that Cummings continued to be played in that withdrawn role in the 2025-26 season, especially in the AFC Champions League two matches.

Cummings can, therefore, really benefit from having a menacing player like Robinho helping him in the attacking transitions.

The Australian forward will have another outlet to look for in the opposition half, as he’ll look to create a special bond with Robinho and play him into the prime scoring areas in the opposition area.

Moreover, Robinho also has enough creative acumen to read Cummings’ off-the-ball movement in the final third and play him through on goal with clever passes.

1. Jamie Maclaren

Jamie Maclaren is aiming to enjoy his most prolific season with Mohun Bagan in the 2025-26 campaign, and the Mariners need him to be at his clinical best to power them to success in the AFC Champions League Two.

Fortunately for the Australian forward, he’s now set to get even more support in the final third with the addition of a quality player like Robinho.

The Brazilian winger was able to pick up 44 assists in 76 matches in the Bangladesh Premier League for Bashundhara Kings, meaning he definitely knows how to perfectly service his centre-forward.

Maclaren just needs to work on creating a solid bond with Robinho so that the Brazilian forward can intuitively realise his movement and when to play passes to him in the final third.

Robinho has the qualities of swinging in dangerous crosses or slipping in Maclaren into empty spaces in the final third, something that can help the Australian get a lot more scorable chances and help him notch up better goal numbers.
