IWL 2025: Full fixtures, schedule, results, standings & more

Gokulam Kerala had dominated the tournament like no other team.

At a point when the future of the Indian Super League (ISL) remains shrouded in questions, the Indian Women’s League (IWL) is set to bring some entertainment to the Indian football fans. The 2025-26 IWL campaign is poised to begin from December 20, with eight of Indian football’s best women’s football clubs fighting for a chance at glory.

The Indian Women’s League will be held all over India across seven different cities, with defending champions East Bengal facing a stern test in retaining the championship. East Bengal commanded their way to the 2024-25 IWL title, winning 12 of their 14 matches and finishing eight points ahead of second-place Gokulam Kerala.

East Bengal are now looking to become only the second club in the history of the IWL to win the championship twice in a row. The only club to do it in the past? Well, that accolade is taken up by Gokulam Kerala, who have had quite the bright history of participating in the IWL since they started playing in the competition from the 2018-19 campaign.

Which team has won the most number of Indian Women’s League titles?

It is indeed Gokulam Kerala WFC who have won the most number of Indian Women’s League titles in the past. The Malabarians women’s team have a dominant history of participating in the competition, and they have won the IWL title three times since its formation in 2016.

Gokulam Kerala first played in the IWL in the 2018-19 campaign, when they lost to Manipur Police in the semifinals. However, they built a really strong squad for the campaign after that and came back firing on all cylinders in the 2019-20 IWL campaign.

Under the guidance of Priya P.V, Gokulam Kerala dominated in the group stages of the 2019-20 IWL season. They won all five matches in their group, scoring a whopping 28 goals and conceding only two goals!

In the knockout rounds, the Malabarians’ women’s team dominated Sethu FC to pck up a huge 3-0 win. They would then face a stern challenge against a really strong KRYPHSA side in the final. Gokulam Kerala raced to a 2-0 lead in the final, but KRYPHSA made it 2-2 in the second half. However, Sabitra Bhandari scored an 87th minute winner for Gokulam Kerala to help them win the IWL title and she was also the top scorer with 16 goals!

Back-to-back title for Malabarians

The IWL, of course, didn’t happen in the 2020-21 campaign because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. From this edition, the IWL’s format was shifted to a league-based system where each team would face each other once in the campaign.

Well, Gokulam Kerala just obliterated their way to the title. They won all their 11 matches, pipping rival Sethu WFC to the title by three points and scoring 66 goals in the campaign. Elshaddai Acheampong scored 20 goals in the competition, winning the Golden Boot to guide her side to a dominant win.

Gokulam Kerala faced a bit of a complicated challenge in the 2022-23 IWL campaign because of the competition being extended to 16 teams. However, they dominated the group stages by winning six of their seven matches, scoring 53 goals. They faced a stern challenge from Odisha FC in the quarterfinal, being held to a 1-1 draw before winning the match 3-0 on a penalty shootout.

However, the Malabarians roared back in the semifinals, putting in a clinic to defeat Eastern Sporting Union by a 5-1 margin before defeating Kickstart in the final by a 5-0 margin to win their third straight IWL campaign. Gokulam Kerala remains the only team in IWL history to win the competitive three times in-a-row. They are comfortably the most successful team in the competition’s history, and aim to win it once again in the 2025-26 campaign.
