Juan Pedro Benali and Antonio Lopez Habas, the two Spanish masterminds in charge of NorthEast United and Inter Kashi, respectively, have brought about a revolution at their clubs. While Benali led the Highlanders to a successful Durand Cup title defence in August, Habas lifted the I-League with Kashi earlier this year.

However, as the two sides gear up for the clash, the unavailability of Habas along with other foreign players could be a serious blow to Kashi’s hopes as they will have to field an all Indian lineup. Goalkeeping coach Abhijit Mondal has stepped in for managerial duties for the time being.

Benali’s Highlanders will aim for all three points

Given Inter Kashi‘s suboptimal situation, Benali will push for all three points, but Mondal remains adamant that the men in Orange will put up a fight. “In football, anything can happen. We’ve retained a strong core, added exciting young players, and have Habas guiding us remotely. The boys are motivated. We’ll fight,” he said.

“The first game is always very important in these kinds of tournaments. It’s the toughest group in the competition. Whichever team advances from here will have a great advantage going into the knockouts,” Benali said in the pre-match press conference.

The two teams will meet each other for the first time. It remains to be seen if the David vs Goliath encounter will go as expected or can the Sumit Passi-led Inter Kashi side can turn the game on its head. In his words, “We’re here to prove ourselves and won’t make it easy for them. It’s going to be a proper test of character.”
