Odisha FC have etched their name in Indian football history. The Bhubaneswar-based outfit isn’t just celebrating their men’s team competing in the Indian Super League (ISL). Their women’s team has secured a historic feat – a place in the much-anticipated AFC Women’s Champions League next season. Odisha FC, a recent entrant into the women’s football scene, have risen above their rivals to secure the coveted championship title.
In the culminating fixture of the league held on March 24, 2024, Odisha FC showcased their dominance by spectacularly securing the title, defeating Kickstart FC with a resounding 6-0 victory at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. This triumph marked their ascent to the top, displacing Gokulam FC, the reigning champions who were long hailed as the frontrunners of Indian women’s football.
As a result, Odisha FC women’s have now earned a spot in the AFC Women’s Champions League. This remarkable feat is a testament to the club’s commitment to women’s football in India. Formed just last year, the Odisha FC Women’s team stormed the Indian Women’s League (IWL) in the 2023-24 season.
This triumph wasn’t just about individual brilliance. Odisha FC fielded a well-balanced squad, boasting both established Indian stars and exciting international talents. Players like national team captain Indumathi Kathiresan anchored the midfield, while Pyari Xaxa emerged as the team’s top scorer, showcasing her prowess in front of goal.
The inclusion of Win Theingi Tun from Myanmar added another dimension to the attack, with the forward contributing a significant number of goals. But the credit doesn’t stop there. Shreya Hooda, another national team member, stood tall under the sticks, conceding a mere four goals throughout the campaign, a testament to her exceptional goalkeeping skills.
Odisha FC’s qualification for the AFC Women’s Champions League marks a significant milestone for Indian women’s football. It paves the way for increased investment, exposure, and competition within the women’s game. The team’s participation in the continental tournament will not only provide invaluable experience to the players and the coach, but also place Indian women’s football on the international stage once again.
