Chennaiyin FC will face Mohun Bagan at the VYBK Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday
Mohun Bagan Super Giant will be looking to reclaim the top spot as they welcome Owen Coyle’s Chennaiyin FC for their Indian Super League clash. The Marina Machans are hurting after a 3-0 loss to rivals Kerala Blasters and will be looking to bounce back on Saturday.
Owen Coyle, the Chennaiyin FC manager attended the press conference before the game against the Mariners. Here are some key points from what the Scotsman spoke ahead of the big game.
Owen Coyle’s praises his former Chennaiyin FC players that are currently playing for Mohun Bagan
Anirudh Thapa, Vishal Kaith, and Deepak Tangri were all part of Owen Coyle’s Chennaiyin FC squad that made it to the finals in the 2019-20 ISL season. However, the trio has since moved on to Mohun Bagan and won the league shield in Kolkata last season.
Asked if knowing his former players well could give Chennaiyin FC an advantage, Owen Coyle stated, “No, it doesn’t give us an edge. What it does is it lets us know the quality they have and they’re outstanding players. I mean, Vishal Kaith is pushing to be the national keeper. Vishal has been so consistent and he was outstanding for me in Season 6, when we went to the final.
Talking about Thapa and Tangri, the Chennaiyin FC manager added, “Thapa is a midfielder that can play in different positions in the midfield. Deepak as well adds a different dimension and he’s a wonderful team player to have. He (Deepak Tangri) was a kid, if you remember. I brought him in, he came off the bench for me and played a couple of games in Season 6. Deepak was only a young man progressing, but you knew he was going to have a good career.”
Owen Coyle on Greg Stewart and the rest of the Mohun Bagan squad
Greg Stewart is another familiar name for Owen Coyle in the Mohun Bagan squad. The attacking midfielder played an important part in Coyle’s Jamshedpur FC side that went on to win the ISL Shield in the 2021-22 season.
Talking about the quality of Greg Stewart, the CFC manager said, “I mean, Greg Stewart, for all his individual qualities, is a proper team player. His teammates love him because of what he does. He’ll mump and moan because he wants to win. He has that. So, what it does is it makes us aware of them because we know their quality.”
Owen Coyle also praised the other Mohun Bagan players adding, “If you look through their team, like they brought Jamie Maclaren in and he has been top scorer in the A-League. Dimitri Petratos has been an outstanding player in the league. Tom Aldred, I know, from his time back in England, he also played in Scotland.”
The Chennaiyin FC manager further praised the likes of Subhasish Bose, Sahal Abdul Samad, Liston Colacao, and Manvir Singh adding that he has been a huge admirer of Sahal, especially. Owen Coyle concluded by saying even though Mohun Bagan have a lot of quality, CFC on their night can stand toe to toe with anyone.
