Indian football: Players with most goal contributions in 2023-24 season
The 2023-24 Indian football season witnessed some top-notch action from domestic stars.
Some players are famous for scoring goals, while some are famous for creating. However, sometimes football teams are blessed with such players who can do both things. There are players with incredible goal-scoring skills as well as creative skills and these players are rare. They bring so much value to the team that they become irreplaceable.
Both Indian Super League and I-League are very challenging and players many times are not consistently able to deliver the performances. Given the league’s unpredictability and toughness, it is very difficult to perform consistently well, yet many players have exceeded expectations and have been a huge force this season.
Here are some Indian players who have not only scored goals but also provided assists to their teammates:
8. Lalchungnunga Chhangte – 5 Goals and 5 Assists
The youngster was really good in this season for the I-League side Rajasthan United where he scored five goals and delivered five assists. As an attacking threat, he was very impactful and used to create a lot of opportunities to score goals. Chhangte has room for improvement but still, the youngster helped his team perform very well this season. With his pace and dribbling ability, he was always a threat to the opposition team.
7. Lalromawia – 7 Goals and 4 Assists
The Sreenidi Deccan midfielder had to suffer a disappointment as his team failed to gain promotion once again this season. But on an individual level, his season was brilliant as he scored six goals and provided four assists in the I-League and scored a goal in Super Cup as well. He is an all-round player who can manage both attacking and defensive departments and having him in the team really helps the balance of any outfit.
6. Manvir Singh – 6 Goals and 10 Assists
Manvir Singh once again was brilliant for Mohun Bagan this season as he helped his team to win the Durand Cup and the ISL Shield. Unfortunately, Mohun Bagan suffered a loss in the ISL final to Mumbai City FC. However, he scored four goals and provided seven assists in the ISL, and also netted twice and delivered an assist in the Durand Cup. Manvir has a very high work ethic and that’s why he is the coach’s favourite. He is always moving up and down the pitch and always gives his best.
5. Vikram Partap Singh – 10 Goals and 5 Assists
This was a breakthrough season for Vikram Partap under Des Buckingham and Petr Kratky, where he slowly emerged into a mature player. He is one of the reasons for Mumbai City’s success in the ISL campaign. Despite facing some challenges, he never gave up and was the best player for Mumbai alongside Lallianzuala Chhangte. He scored eight goals and provided four assists in the ISL to become the second-highest Indian goal-scorer.
4. Edmund Lalrindika – 7 Goals and 9 Assists
Edmund had a fine season with I-League debutants Inter Kashi. Not many people expected him to overperform like this, as he was exceptional for them – four goals and eight assists. This was the first competitive season of Inter Kashi and Edmund was the star player for them. He is currently training with Canadian top-division side Atletico Ottawa.
3. Noufal PN – 5 Goals and 8 Assists
Gokulam Kerala‘s Noufal had 13 goal contributions this season and performed really well. He completely lived up to the expectations of the fans and the coaching staff. He is a very underrated player for his team as even though he works very hard and gives everything on the pitch his heroics go unnoticed many times. There have been rumours that he can sign for Mumbai City FC next season and adding him to the roster will bolster the Islanders’ midfield for sure.
2. Lallianzuala Chhangte – 11 Goals and 7 Assists
The greatest asset of Lallianzuala Chhangte’s game is his dribbling ability. He is a close ball controller and can quickly change the direction and body orientation due to his low centre of gravity. He is fast, loves to position himself wide to the flanks waiting for a pass and then go one-on-one with the opposition full-back. Like the previous season, he was exceptional this term too as he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in the ISL and was the top Indian goal-scorer. Even though he didn’t win the Golden Ball but his impact on Mumbai’s success was very crucial.
1. Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia – 15 Goals and 3 Assists
By scoring 15 goals and bagging three assists in 20 appearances in the 2023-24 I-League season, the 23-year-old Aizawl FC forward has scripted his name in the history of Indian football, becoming the highest Indian goal-scorer in the competition’s history in a single season. He broke the joint record previously held by Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri in the 2013-14 season and Mohammed Rafi in the 2009-10 edition. His performance was so good that it surprised many people. He will grow more as a player in the upcoming season for sure.
