How can India still qualify for AFC U-20 Asian Cup 2027?
Indian U-20 lost their last game 4-0 against Uzbekistan.
The Indian U-20 side, led by the assistant coach of the senior national team, has an exciting opportunity to become just the second Indian men’s team to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup after Bibiano Fernandes’ India U-17 side. In women’s football, meanwhile, teams from every age group have managed to qualify.
To do so, they must either finish at the top of their group or finish as one of the seven best-placed second-placed teams to make it through the qualifiers as one of the 15 qualified teams. The Blue Colts have been placed in Group B and have already played two games in the tournament.
Let’s take a look at how Mahesh Gawli’s side and the group as a whole have fared so far, what India must do in their final group-stage game to finish in the top two, and whether they still have a chance of making it through.
On a positive note, they are still very much alive in the race for qualification. Let’s delve deeper into their performances so far and the possibilities that lie ahead.
What has happened in the group so far?

Placed in Group B as a Pot 3 team alongside Uzbekistan (hosts), Syria and Bangladesh, India were handed a decent group with a very bright chance of making it through to the main tournament.
The Blue Colts started their campaign with a closely contested 1-0 win over Pot 2 side Syria. While the performance was not particularly convincing or easy on the eye, Mahesh Gawli’s side were defensively resolute and did just enough in attack to nick a goal and secure all three points, thanks to Shami’s winner.
The second game, however, was against hosts Uzbekistan, who were clear favourites on paper. Uzbekistan lived up to expectations and exposed the limitations in Mahesh Gawli’s side, securing a 4-0 victory that boosted their own goal difference while damaging India’s.
As for the other results in the group, Uzbekistan have won both of their games, while Syria bounced back from their defeat against India in the opening game with a convincing 3-0 win over Bangladesh.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, have lost both their games, finds themselves rooted to the bottom of the table and is on course for relegation to the development phase if they fail to win their final game.
What must India do in the final game to qualify for the main tournament?
Despite the 4-0 loss against Uzbekistan in the second game increasing India’s negative goal difference, the narrow win over Syria means the Blue Colts are still in a strong position to finish second and potentially qualify for the final tournament as one of the seven best-placed second-placed teams.
Unlike the SAFF U-20 Championship, where the Blue Colts lost against the Bengal Tigers, if India manages to beat Bangladesh in their final game, Mahesh Gawli and his boys will not have to depend on any other result within the group to finish second, as they would finish ahead of Syria thanks to their superior head-to-head record.
However, they will still have to wait for results from other groups to ensure they finish among the seven best-placed second-placed teams, with every team currently occupying second place having either three or four points, including India.
If India manages only a draw or suffers a defeat against Bangladesh, their chances of progressing will become significantly slimmer. While a draw could still see them finish second, provided Uzbekistan defeat Syria, Mahesh Gawli’s side would then have to rely heavily on results from other groups, with several second-placed teams needing to drop points.
If both India and Syria lose their final games, a mini table would form between India, Syria, and Bangladesh, with all three teams tied on three points and each having a win and a loss against the other two sides. In that scenario, Syria could progress if Bangladesh fail to defeat India by a margin of three goals or more.
Note, the scoreline against Uzbekistan will not be considered for the goal difference in the mini-table in this case.
