The Indian football team is gearing up for its final challenge in the September-October international break. Following a 1-1 draw against Panama and a 4-0 loss to Brazil, the Blue Tigers will now go up against Diego Forlán’s Uruguay at the VYBK in Kolkata on 6th October, 2026.
After their spirited 1-1 draw against Panama in Bengaluru, Khalid Jamil’s side were beaten 4-0 by Brazil on Saturday. However, the scoreline does not paint the complete picture of the matches, as India conceded goals due to individual errors in the Brazil game, while having chances to get on the scoresheet themselves.
While the result didn’t go India’s way, the performance against Brazil has given renewed belief to the supporters and has further improved morale in the Indian dressing room.
Before the start of the 2026-27 Indian Super League season, the Indian Football team will line up against two-time FIFA World Cup Champions, Uruguay, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan VYBK in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Uruguay, China, South Korea, Italy’s U-21 team, and Yugoslavia’s B team were invited to play in the 1982 Nehru Cup that was hosted in Calcutta. The legendary Eden Gardens hosted all the matches in the tournament, which saw Uruguay win the 1982 Nehru Cup by beating China 2-0 in the final.
The Blue Tigers played Uruguay on 25th February 1982 in front of a jam-packed Eden Gardens. The visitors silenced the Indian supporters early in the match, as Atletico Madrid’s Jorge da Silva bagged goals in the 8th and 23rd minutes.
However, the Blue Tigers showed courage and got back into the game through a Manas Bhattacharya goal in the 35th minute, giving belief to the Calcutta crowd.
Having kept the score at 2-1 at halftime, the hosts continued their quest for a comeback in the second half. However, Uruguay remained resolute and eventually struck their final blow in the 70th minute through Mario Saralegui to deflate India’s spirits and register a 3-1 win.
Though the hosts lost to Uruguay and Italy’s U-21 team, they played out hard-fought draws against South Korea and China and also managed to register a 2-1 win over Yugoslavia’s B-team to end the tournament in fifth place.

Blue Tigers also played Uruguay’s B-team in the 2001 Sahara Cup that featured 15 teams. The Blue Tigers were drawn in Group II alongside Iceland and Indonesia, with the South American nation also in the group. Indonesia withdrew days before the tournament started, reducing Group II to three teams.
The India vs Uruguay B match was played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, where the hosts suffered a 3-0 loss. The Blue Tigers also lost 3-0 to Iceland, finishing at the bottom of Group II.
Uruguay B topped the group, as they defeated Iceland, going to the knock-outs, losing to Bosnia on a golden goal in the Quarter-Finals of the tournament.
What happened when the Blue Tigers last played against Uruguay?
