India 3-2 Pakistan: Key takeaways from SAFF Championship 2026 clash

The Blue Tigers will now face Maldives on 11th November, 2026

The Indian football team got their 2026 SAFF Championship campaign off to a thrilling start with a 3-2 win over Pakistan at the National Stadium (Dhaka) on Thursday, 5 November (2026).

The Blue Tigers put up a thrilling display in the first half, with Suhail Bhat scoring a brace within the first 20 minutes of the match to put his side in the driving seat.

After that, Manglenthang Kipgen scored his first international goal for India with a lovely finish to put them into an unassailable lead and help them take total control of the clash. The Blue Tigers had a few big chances to score more goals in the second half as well but were unable to add more misery to their rivals.

Pakistan were able to score one goal through Najeeb Ullah in the 91st minute, before Alamgir Ghazi scored a stunning effort three minutes later. Despite that nervy ending, the Blue Tigers held on to get the three points against their rivals.

Irrespective of that disappointing finish, it was a compelling display from the Indian players – who produced an entertaining attacking display to show why they’ll be favourites to win the 2026 SAFF Championship. A few notable things were also learnt about Naushad Moosa’s side in this result, as we look at the talking points from the game.

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

4. Irresistible Manglenthang Kipgen proves himself ready to excel in senior international football.

Manglenthang Kipgen made his debut for the India national team in the clash against Pakistan, and the 21-year-old’s thrilling performance validated Naushad Moosa’s trust in him.

The Punjab FC forward was a menacing threat for the opposition players, often getting into the empty spaces in the final third and being able to create six goal-scoring opportunities for his teammates. He also made a clever run into the penalty area to score his first international goal for India.

After having scored five goals for the India U-20 team in the past, Kipgen’s performance proves that he has the character and unpredictability factor to thrive at the senior level for the Blue Tigers. He has that element of surprise in his playing style, being able to move past opponents with ease and also being decisive in creating or finishing chances.

Kipgen’s impressive start to the SAFF Championship will give him a lot of confidence, but he’ll look to keep this momentum to get more goal involvements to raise his importance within the Indian team options.

3. Finishing issues remain to be resolved for the Indian frontline.

Even though the Blue Tigers scored three goals in the space of the first 35 minutes against Pakistan, there was a lot of room for them to score quite a few more after that. Naushad Moosa’s players definitely didn’t hit the breaks in the second half, as they kept on creating big chances and getting into promising areas in the opposition’s final third.

However, the Indian forwards failed to convert their chances – missing quite a few big goal-scoring opportunities from close range after losing their concentration in the key areas.

The Blue Tigers had 15 shot attempts in the match and 22 touches in the Pakistan penalty area. Despite that, they only had four shots on target – out of which three ended up as goals. Moosa will definitely need his players to be more prolific in key goal-scoring situations going forward, because all these missed chances can come back to haunt them in future matches.

2. India’s lethal counter-attacking heroics prove too hot to handle for brittle Pakistan.

The Indian players might’ve missed their share of chances against Pakistan, but there is no doubt about how impressive they were on the counter-attacks. Naushad Moosa’s forwards moved like a well-oiled machine, ensuring that they put the Pakistani defenders under pressure on the transitions and were able to get the ball from defence into attack in a mere few seconds.

It was an excellent counter-attack that started from a long throw-in that resulted in Suhail’s first goal.

Then after that, Kipgen’s goal was also thanks to some stellar work from the Indian players on the break – as they managed to de-organise the Pakistan backline shape by finding them in awkward situations for their goals. India kept on creating more prominent chances through speedy counter-attacks in the second half but failed to finish them off that well.

Despite that, the accuracy, link-up play, and sheer speed that the Indian players showed in the transition were too unpredictable for the Pakistani backline to handle or stop the Indian forwards from scoring multiple goals.

1. Suhail Bhat’s predatory instincts enhance his standing among India’s primary centre-forward options

How can the Indian U-23 football team line up for the U- 23 Tri-Nations tournament?
Suhail Bhat scores a brace vs Pakistan in the SAFF 2026.

Suhail Bhat was given the chance to lead the Indian frontline in the clash against Pakistan, and he took the opportunity with utmost conviction. The Mohun Bagan forward might not have been able to score in the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) so far, but he proved how decisive he can be as a finisher in this rivalry clash.

Bhat was in the right place at the right time to tap in the opening goal before he also made a brilliant run to finish off his second goal in style.

He kept making clever runs in behind the Pakistan centre-backs, disrupting their shape and causing them a lot of problems. He also looked to be pretty compelling with his link-up play and ability to physically contest in duels, showing that the young forward has the attributes to excel in senior international football.

While Bhat might not be in Khalid Jamil’s plans exactly right now, his ability to convert chances and predatory movement in the final third keep him as an exciting option to spearhead the Indian attack.
