India U-20 target win over Bhutan U-20 to book SAFF U20 Championship final berth

India U-20 finished as the table toppers of Group B.
The Indian U-20 squad are getting ready for their semifinal match against Bhutan U-20 in the SAFF U-20 Championship 2026. The match is set to begin at 21:00 PM IST at the National Football Stadium in Male, Maldives.
The talented Blue Colts are unbeaten in the competition, having won their first game against Pakistan U-20 and drawing their second against Bangladesh U-20.
This helped them finish first in Group B, allowing them to face a much weaker Bhutan in the semi-finals rather than Nepal.
The Stakes
India U-20

It is fair to say that Mahesh Gawali’s term as head coach of the Indian U-20 squad is off to a good start, with his team earning four points from two games and finishing first in the group on goal differential.
While young Blue Colts were the dominant force in the first game against Pakistan, the second game against Bangladesh proved difficult as they battled to retain possession of the ball and gave up several chances.
The midfield appeared to be very weak, with no one able to retain possession of the ball and dominate the tempo of game.
They also failed to convert the limited amount of opportunities they produced, with Omang Dodum missing a couple key ones. Mahesh Gawali will like to solve these concerns in the game against Bhutan while also finding other goal scorers besides Omang Dodum and Vishal Yadav.
On paper, India should easily win this match, and they are anticipated to go to the competition’s final to face Bangladesh or Nepal, presuming no major upsets.

Bhutan U-20

Bhutan, on the other hand, finished second in their group, three points behind leaders Nepal. They began their campaign with a defeat to Nepal but performed excellently in the last two games, drawing against Maldives and securing three points versus Sri Lanka in stoppage time.
Bhutan has struggled to score, scoring only twice in three games with squandering several simple chances in front of goal. Captain Rinzin Dorji does his best to quickly get into deadly positions but is unable to convert his chances into goals.
On the bright side, they have been fairly resolute defensively, maintaining back-to-back clean sheets against host Maldives and Sri Lanka.
Head coach Karma Dema would be aiming for a similar defensive performance from his team to keep India quiet in attack and score on counterattacks.
Team News
Vishal Yadav, who had cramps in the last game, is likely to be fit for India. Apart from Vishal, there have been no big injuries reported in the Indian NT camp.
Bhutan, on the other hand, will have Ngawang Yonten return to full fitness after being substituted midway through the first half in their match against Maldives.
Head-to-Head
These two sides last met in the group stages of the 2024 SAFF U-20 Championship, where the Blue Colts headed by Ranjan Chowdhury defeated Bhutan 1-0.
Interestingly, Bhutan has never won a match against India in the U-19/U-20 age level, having lost all six encounters with the Blue Colts.

Players to Watchout
Vishal Yadav (India U-20)

What a tournament Vishal Yadav is having for India so far. He scored the first goal in the very first match against Pakistan and the lone strike in the last game against Bangladesh.
Vishal, who began as a left winger, is always making runs into the box to get on the end of dangerous crosses or through balls.
He is also an excellent ball carrier on the flanks, having the ability to dribble the ball from his own half to the opposition’s 18-yard box, as he demonstrated on multiple times throughout the first two games.
Vishal also has an excellent work ethic, frequently assisting his fullback with track-backs.
Dhendup Gyeltshen (Bhutan U-20)

If there is one player on the Bhutan U-20 team who knows how to score goals, it is Dhendup Gyeltshen. Dhendup has scored both of Bhutan’s goals in this competition thus far.
Starting as a left winger, like Vishal, Dhendup has the ability to make late runs into the far post to get on to dangerous crosses, as he did against Sri Lanka to score a late winner.
His link-up play with offensive midfielder Rinzin and striker Kelden is impressive, as the trio seeks to create more than half of Bhutan’s attacks from the left wing.
