India U19 team kicked off SAFF U19 Championship 2025 with a dominant 8-0 win over Sri Lanka U19.

The SAFF U19 Championship 2025 is underway in Arunachal Pradesh as the India U19 team get set to take the field once again. The Blue Colts will face Nepal U19 on Tuesday with the winner finishing on top of Group B.

Both India and Nepal have already qualified for the semifinals from their group. On the other hand, Bangladesh U19 have qualified for the semifinals from Group A, and either Bhutan or Maldives will join the Bengal Tigers.

India and Nepal’s run in the SAFF U19 Championship 2025 so far

The Indian youngsters started SAFF U19 Championship 2025 in fine fashion by beating the Sri Lanka U19 team 8-0 at the Golden Jubilee Stadium. Danny Meitei’s hattrick and Prashan Jajo’s brace stole the show for the Blue Colts as they picked up all three points.

Nepal’s youngsters too picked up a handsome 5-0 win over Sri Lanka on Sunday. Sujan Dango, Dharbendra Kunwar, Subash Bam, Bigyan Khadka, and Lachhu Thapa were on the scoresheet for the young Gorkhalis.

As a result of the two losses, Sri Lanka were officially eliminated from the SAFF U19 Championship 2025. They will finish at the bottom of Group B while both India and Nepal still stand a chance to finish at the top.

If the game between India U19 and Nepal U19 ends in a draw, the Blue Colts will top Group B on goal difference.

India U19 vs Nepal U19: What to expect?

Enjoying home advantage, the India U19 team will once again be the stronger side on paper. However, Nepal U19 should not be underestimated after their dominant win on Sunday.

Nepal will surely challenge India more than what Sri Lanka’s U19 team was able to do. Both teams kept a clean sheet in their first game and hence both defences will be positive going into this one.

In terms of attack, the focus will be on India’s Danny Meitei, who scored a hattrick against Sri Lanka last week. Nepal’s Sujan Dangol impressed in his side’s opening game, also scoring a goal and hence he will have to carry the goal scoring responsibility for his team.

India U19 and Nepal U19: History in SAFF U19 Championships

This is the seventh edition of SAFF’s junior Championship and the third one in terms of SAFF’s U19 Championship. India won the SAFF U19 Championship in 2023 whereas Nepal won the SAFF U19 Championship in 2015.

Nepal had beaten India in the 2015 final on penalties to win the title. India U19’s took their revenge by beating the young Gorkhalis on penalties in the semifinal of the 2023 edition, enroute to winning the tournament that year.

Nepal U19 and India U19 will play at the Golden Jubilee Stadium, Yupia, on 13th May 2025 (Tuesday). The match will kick off at 7:30 PM IST and will be streamed live on the Sportzworkz YouTube channel.
