SAFF U-20 Championship 2026: Refereeing errors and other talking points from India U20 vs Bangladesh U20

Vishal Yadav scored the solitary goal for the Blue Tigers

The India U-20 Football Team played a 1-1 draw against the Bangladesh U-20 Football team on the 28th of March 2026, in their Group B fixture of the SAFF U-20 Championship, held in the Maldives.

With this draw, India has qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament as the Group B winners.

The game started quickly, with Bangladesh attempting to break the deadlock with their attacks from left, right and centre. But as the game progressed, India slowly got a hold of the game and scored the opener in the 16th minute.

Omang set up a brilliant ball off a corner to Vishal, who was unmarked in the six-yard box area. The player effortlessly headed in the solitary goal for the Blue Colts in the match.

In the stoppage time of the first half, Bangladesh won a lucky corner off a defensive mistake from the Indian defense.

They properly capitalized on this error and brought the scores back to parity, courtesy of Abdul Riyad, who kept his eyes on the ball and connected it to the back of the net.

Later, in the second half, despite both teams trying to score a goal and gain an advantage, none of their efforts were converted, and the game ended in a 1-1 scoreline.

Here is a look at the key talking points of the match between India U20 and Bangladesh U20.

Shaky start, composed response, shaky finish

The game started with an attacking tone as the Bangladesh U-20 Football Team kept attacking from the first whistle. Nearly, for the first seven minutes of the game, they kept knocking on the Indian doors and even tested the keeper a couple of times.

But as the clock kept on ticking, the India U-20 slowly adapted to the game and kept crafting their offensive initiatives, primarily using long balls from the flanks. This paid dividends in the 17th minute as one such attack gifted India with a corner kick.

Omang Dodum stepped up to take the corner and brilliantly deployed the ball into the second post, where Vishal Yadav was unmarked. Vishal went on to seamlessly head the ball into the back of the net to break the deadlock of the match and provide India U-20 with the advantage.

However, after the water break, the Blue Colts slowed down the game and resisted themselves from aggressively attacking. This laid the foundation for Bangladesh to slowly dominate over India and eventually score the equalizer in the dying seconds of the first half.

Poor judgments in the defensive and offensive third

In both the defensive third and the final third, the Blue Colts lacked decision-making during a few instances, which backfired. For a good share of the first half, Suraj lacked positioning and left gaps, which were properly capitalized by Bangladesh.

However, the keeper, Suraj, stood alert and somehow managed to keep the danger away.

In the stoppage time of the first half, Bangladesh got a throw-in in the attacking half. The throw-in, which was taken long, which could have been cleared away comfortably, was cleared as a corner.

However, conceding this unwanted corner paved the way for Bangladesh scoring their equalizer in the final touch of the first half, providing the opponents with added confidence at the break.

In the second half, Omang made a silly move, which cost India U-20 the 2-1 lead. The player made a brilliant dribble from the left to the centre of the box. However, poor judgment and a delay in taking the shot at goal meant that the score remained 1-1.

In the 89th minute, Omang got yet another chance, but a bad, heavy touch from the player’s side gave away the ball straight to the keeper.

Poor refereeing

The referring decisions were also against the India U-20 during multiple instances. Right from the first half, the decisions made by the referee were way under par, as a good number of offences made by the Bangladeshi players were compromised by the referee.

Early in the first half, one of the Bangladeshi players made a rash tackle in the middle of the pitch, which was just called a foul rather than issuing a yellow card to the player.

In the stoppage time of the first half, Vishal Yadav was fouled in the final third, and later on, pushed off the ball, which again was ignored by the referee as he did not issue a card yet again.

Apart from these, there were multiple instances where the Bangladeshi players were not booked with a card. In the final minutes of the game, the Bangladeshi captain made a rash off-the-ball push on Prashan Jajo out of frustration. This clear red card offence was just given a yellow card by the referee.

Apart from this, a good number of fouls were denied to the Blue Colts, which, if allowed, could have had some effects on the scoreline.

In an arguement in the sidelines regarding the refereeing decisions, the Bangladesh U-20 head coach and India U-20 goalkeeping coach were sent off with a red card.

A slow second half

The Blue Colts continued to play the second half in a slow-paced manner. However, stepping onto this half, they remained relatively sharper in the defensive third and even made a few chances to attack. Apart from the two chances that Omang got along with a couple of set-pieces, the half remained less eventful and moved in a snail-paced manner.

India U-20, who just needed a draw to finish the group stage as table toppers, played safe, kept possession of the ball and ensured that the opponents did not score yet again.

India qualifies for the semi-finals as the Group B winners

With this win, India U-20 has secured their spot in the semi-finals of the SAFF U-20 Championship. As the winners of the Group B table, the Blue Colts will face Bhutan U-20, the second-placed team of the Group A table.

After a 2-1 losing start to their campaign against Nepal, Bhutan got their momentum in their match against the hosts, the Maldives, where, despite all odds, they held the Maldives to a 0-0 deadlock.

In their final do-or-die match of the group stage, they defeated Sri Lanka 1-0 to qualify as the Group A runners up.
