India U20 eye title against defending champions Bangladesh in the SAFF U20 Championship

The Blue Colts awaits for their fifth SAFF U20 title
India U20 men’s team is determined to reclaim their SAFF U-20 Championship title when they face defending champions Bangladesh in the final at the National Football Stadium, Male on Friday, 3 April 2026.
The Blue Colts have had a dominant campaign so far but need to produce their most efficient performance to oust this strong Bangladesh U20 side and win their first piece of silverware under Mahesh Gawli.
The Stakes
India U20

The India U20 side has shown a lot of promise under Mahesh Gawli so far, having a dominant campaign in the SAFF U20 championship so far. They have won two of their three matches in compelling fashion and recently put away Bhutan U20 by a 5-0 margin in the semifinals! However, the Blue Colts face their biggest challenge yet against Bangladesh U20, who they played out a draw against in the group stages.
Gawli needs his side to keep a really stubborn defensive structure to frustrate their opponents and also for his players to be proactive and clinical on the attack. A win for India in getting revenge over Bangladesh will feel sweet for the players and cap off an impressive campaign, but losing in the final after so much hard work will be particularly dismal.
Bangladesh U20

Bangladesh U20 looks to get revenge over their Indian counterparts in the final of the SAFF U20 Championship, after they came up short in the previous edition. The Bengal Tigers lost the 2025 SAFF U19 final to India on penalties, and look to ensure something like that doesn’t happen again. Bangladesh U20 have also won two of their three matches so far, getting gritty wins over Pakistan and Nepal to reach the final.
Mark Cox will now look to motivate his players to be at their hard-working best against the Indian side for them to have a chance of getting the win. They’ll need to be prolific on the counter-attacks and their attacking chances to trouble the Blue Colts, and also have to keep a really solid defensive line to frustrate them. A win for Bangladesh U20 would be vindication of their growth under Cox, but another loss in the final to India would be extremely demoralising.
Team News
Mahesh Gawli should have the same squad available as he did in the semi-final win over Bhutan.
Mark Cox is also expected to have a fully fit unit at his disposal for the SAFF U20 Championship final.

Players to Watch
Omang Dodum (India U20)

Omang Dodum has been on fire for India U20 in the 2026 SAFF U20 Championship, coming in as a clutch player in their frontline in almost every game so far. The Punjab FC youngster has been a thorn for the defenders because of his clever off-the-ball movement in the final third and ability to sniff out chances in the danger zones. Dodum has scored three goals so far and is gunning to win the Golden Boot in the tournament this time around.
He will look to torment the Bangladesh defenders with his clever movement, dragging them out of their comfort zone and causing gaps to fill into their backline. He will, although, mostly be tasked to getting at the end of chances himself and finish off opportunities in a dominant fashion to help India U20 get a big win and claim the championship in style.
Ronan Sullivan (Bangladesh U20)

Bangaldesh U20 have their own special weapon in the form of forward Ronan Sullivan, who has impressed for them in the SAFF U20 Championship so far. Sullivan is the brother of Philadelphia Union star Quinn Sullivan and is himself a part of their youth team as well, as he’s opted to play for Bangladesh at the international level. Ronan scored an impressive brace against Pakistan U20 earlier in the tournament and will look to tap into his clinical best in the final against India U20.
Sullivan will be aiming to use his technical skills and clever movement to disrupt the Indian backline and help create chances for his teammates. He’ll also be eager to getting at the end of opportunities by timing his runs perfectly and make good use of his set-piece ability to help unlock the Indian backline.
