Former India captain Shabbir Ali believes India’s upcoming international friendlies against Brazil and Uruguay will provide the current generation with a rare opportunity to test themselves against some of the best players in world football.
India will face Panama in Bengaluru on September 26 before taking on Brazil on October 3 and Uruguay on October 6 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata. Shabbir, who represented India against strong international opposition during his playing career, feels such matches can give the players valuable exposure and help build their confidence.

The former striker recalled facing Argentina and Uruguay during his playing days. India suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Argentina in the Nehru Cup, with the South American side featuring several top players who later went on to play at the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
“Only Maradona and one other player were missing,” Shabbir Ali said. India also lost 3-1 to Uruguay, with Manas Bhattacharya scoring India’s goal.
Shabbir believes the current Indian team can take plenty from facing teams of such high quality. “There’s a big difference in rankings, but our boys will gain confidence. It will be a wonderful learning experience for the current players,” he said.
Former India captain looks excited about the games
The former India captain also expects the matches to create a huge buzz in Kolkata, where football enjoys a special place in the hearts of supporters. He pointed to the excitement surrounding Lionel Messi’s visit to the city in 2011 and Brazil veterans playing in Chennai as examples of the passion generated whenever major football stars come to India.
“When major teams visit, excitement naturally skyrockets. When Messi came back in 2011, people travelled all the way from Hyderabad to Kolkata, just to watch him play. I also saw it when Brazil veterans played in Chennai, the turnout and energy were incredible. This will be even bigger,” he said.
Shabbir also fondly remembered Diego Maradona’s visit to Kolkata in 2008. “I’m excited just watching from the sidelines. If I could turn back time, it would be incredible. Back in 2008, when I was coaching a team and Maradona visited Kolkata, the atmosphere was unreal,” he said.
With Brazil and Uruguay set to arrive in India, Shabbir believes the national team must make the most of these opportunities and gain as much experience as possible from playing against top-level opposition.
“I’ll definitely be coming,” Shabbir Ali said, confirming that he will be in Kolkata to watch the matches live.
