All eyes will be on India’s second-round World Cup qualifier match against Kuwait on June 6, 2024, as the skipper of the Indian men’s football team, Sunil Chhetri is going to play his last international match. Sunil announced his retirement news from international football a few days ago.
Chhetri who made his debut against Pakistan in 2005, has till now appeared in 150 matches for the Blue Tigers and has scored 94 goals, which is the highest by any Indian player. In this article, we will have a look at the number of goals Sunil Chhetri has scored against different opponents at the international level.
1 Goal – Sri Lanka, Hongkong, Kuwait, Bahrain, Macau, North Korea, Palestine, Philippines, Cameroon, Curacao, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Vanuatu
Sunil Chhetri has scored one goal against 14 countries in his career. Which has taken his goals tally to 94 in all total. He also played against 16 other countries but has never managed to score any goal against them.
2 Goals – Syria, Oman, Thailand
He has also scored two goals against three countries, Syria, Oman and Thailand. While the two goals against Syria came in seven matches, against Oman he took five matches and three against Thailand to achieve the feat.
3 Goals – Myanmar, Malaysia, Guam, Bhutan, Vietnam
The list also includes three goals against Myanmar, Malaysia, Guam, Bhutan and Vietnam. While he has played five matches against Malaysia, he has appeared in four against Malaysia, three against Guam, and two against Bhutan and Vietnam.
4 Goals – Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kenya
Sunil Chhetri has scored four goals against three countries. In seven appearances against Pakistan, five against Kyrgyzstan and just two appearances against Kenya. Interestingly, Chhetri’s first international goal came against Pakistan in the very first match of his career.
5 Goals – Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Cambodia
The Indian skipper has scored five goals against Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Cambodia. The goals came in 10 appearances against Afghanistan, five against Tajikistan and appearances against Cambodia.
6 Goals – Bangladesh, Chinese Taipei
The next comes, six goals against Bangladesh and Chinese Taipei. Although the number of goals are the same, Chhetri scored them in six appearances against Bangladesh and five appearances against the Chinese Taipei.
8 Goals – Maldives
The next on the list comes the Maldives, against whom the Indian skipper has scored eight goals in six appearances. He opened his account against the nation in 2011 at the South Asian Football Federation Championship where he scored two goals.
9 Goals – Nepal
Chhetri has scored nine goals against Nepal, which is his highest against any nation. He has played 13 games against the nation, which is also his highest appearance against any country in his career. He scored his first goal against Nepal in 2008 at the South Asian Football Federation Championship.
