Playing in front of a packed home crowd, Malappuram started the derby on an attacking note and came close to breaking the deadlock in the opening minute. A quick move down the left flank saw Bilal find Mehdi inside the box, but his effort narrowly missed the target.

Malappuram continued to threaten, and Daniel Lalhlimpuia came close to opening the scoring in the 37th minute. Receiving a through ball from Elforsy, the forward advanced towards the goal and unleashed a shot, but Calicut’s defence managed to deflect it behind for a corner.

Calicut opened the scoring in the 40th minute through the young Calwin Thomas when the striker cleverly got past Dheeraj before slotting the ball into the roof of the net. Two minutes later, Calicut doubled their advantage. Calwin played a dangerous corner into the box, which Alexis Sosa met with a well-directed header to make it 2-0.

In the 45th minute, Federico Boasso produced an excellent run down the right before delivering a precise cross into the penalty area. Leonardo David timed his run perfectly and finished clinically to put the visitors firmly in control at 3-0.
