Calicut FC registered a clinical 2-0 win against Thiruvananthapuram Kombans in the second match of the first gameweek of the Super League Kerala on the 26th of September 2026 at the EMS Corporation Stadium, Calicut.

First-half strikes from the captain Prashanth K and Maxmiliano Nicolas ensured that Calicut FC started their Super League Kerala 2026 campaign on a positive note at home. With this win, Calicut have climbed to the top of the table with three points, and Thiruvananthapuram Kombans remain at the bottom of the Super League Kerala points table.

Calicut strike twice

Thiruvananthapuram Kombans started the proceedings and primarily channelised their offensive initiatives from the left wing off Muhammed Nisham, who displayed a good pace. Nisham combined well with Patrick Mota and Paulo Cezar and did well to keep the Calicut defence on alert.

Calicut also slowly built up their play, holding possession and controlling the ball mainly in the midfield. Calwin Thomas looked sharp in the midfield, dispossessing the Kombans players and helping Calicut regain the tempo.

In the 14th minute, one such build-up from Calicut led to Maximiliano Nicolas taking a shot from inside the box, the first time the Beacons tested the Kombans defence.

19th minute saw Boasso win a long ball and provide a searching ball to Andrews, who did not anticipate the ball and failed to properly connect. Boasso kept troubling the Kombans’ defensive unit, and in the 22nd minute, he made a cheeky move inside the box before providing a cut-back to Prashant, who made no mistake in breaking the deadlock and giving the hosts the lead.

After conceding, Kombans came out of their shell and started to press more aggressively, and in the 28th minute, Joseph Gordon deployed a powerful long-range shot, which almost felt like it went in, but to his dismay, hit the side netting.

Kombans were a bit lazy in defending and lacked communication, which saw them gifting possession to Calicut multiple times in dangerous positions. Calicut, on the other side, eager to double their advantage, kept attacking with the Boasso-Prashanth-Maximiliano trio and kept winning set pieces in the final third, to which the Kombans’ goalkeeper responded well.

In the 44th, Patrick Mota took a brilliant set-piece from distance, which, after an awkward bounce, went straight to the target, but the Calicut keeper Mirshad kept his eyes on the ball and made a dive to the right to prevent Kombans from scoring.

In stoppage time, Calicut’s young midfielder Andrews, who was racing into the box with Thiruvananthapuram defender Jestin George in hot pursuit, tumbled, winning Calicut a penalty, which Maximiliano seamlessly converted, and at the stroke of half-time, Calicut were leading 2-0.

Calicut start Super League Kerala 2026 with a win

In the second half, the Kombans came onto the pitch with a completely changed strategy and a couple of changes. They looked more aggressive and were much more physically involved than they were in the first half.

This saw them making a good number of entries into the final third and testing the Calicut defence. However, the former NorthEast United keeper Mirshad was comfortable between the sticks and made some timely saves and catches.

Kombans kept winning set pieces, taking shots and initiating counterattacks, challenging the Beacons, but they were not able to find the back of the net. Calicut also made some rare chances to attack, but none of them really tested Satyajit.

At full-time, the game ended 2-0 in favour of Calicut FC, and Thiruvananthapuram Kombans will have to wait to find their first-ever win against Calicut FC in the Super League Kerala.
