Super League Kerala 2026: Calicut win Malabar Derby defeating Malappuram on penalties

Calicut go 1st in the league after winning 4-3 on penalties.

On 2nd October 2026, the Super League Kerala 2026 saw their first Malabar derby being won by Calicut as Leo David scored a 75th minute equalizer, forcing penalties. Calicut won 4-3 courtesy of a penalty miss from both Elforsy & Abith K.

Calicut Keeper Mirshad won player of the match as he saved his team from multiple close moments during the match. Leo David shone for the home team after coming on as a substitute, as Daniel Lalhlimpuia’s goal for Malappuram earned them 1 point.

The match helps Calicut climb to the top of the league with 5 points 1 win, 1 draw and a goal difference of +2. Malappuram sit 4th on behind Kannur Warriors, with 1 point, 1 draw and a loss with a goal difference of -1.

The Beacon Brigade & Malappuram Ultras showed up in numbers to watch the Malabar derby between Calicut & Malappuram play out.

The first half started with the home team creating most of the opportunities of the game. For the first 10 minutes, the match remained a very close battle, where the ball kept getting lost in the midfield. It was after a few minutes that both the teams started to make some strides towards goal scoring chances.

The first big chance came in the 15th minute of the match, when Malappuram captain Amadou Soukouna got a 1v1 chance against Calicut custodian Mirshad. Mirshad rushed out from his goal in an attempt to make a save and blocked the shot from the Malappuram forward using his left hand.

Another big chance for Malappuram came in the 41st minute of the game, when Elforsy got a ball courstesy of a mistake by Mirshad. Despite the mistake, the goalie redeemed himself by making a save from what was an easy chance for the Moroccan.

In the 27th minute of the match, Abdul Samed of Malappuram found himself being marked by Calicut defender Alexis Sosa. The Argentine defender grabbed ahold of Samed while marking him & in an effort to get away, Samed elbowed the Argentine enough for Sosa to fall down.

The elbow would’ve cost Malappuram a Red Card, but they were lucky the incident took place away from the ball and went unnoticed.

The second half was as exciting as the first half, with two goals scored each and a very solid display of goalkeeping from both Calicut Keeper, Mirshad and Malappuram custodian Arbaz.

In the 65th minute of match, a cross came into Calicut’s defensive box. The cross almost missed all players huddled up inside the box, but it was Mashoor Shereef who leaped up to cushion the ball towards the other end of the goal.

Right when the ball was in front of an open goal, Daniel Lalhlimpuia came sliding in and helped the ball on its way to the goal, sending the visitors 1-0 up on the night.

Calicut started attacking as much as possible in order to get an equlizer straight away. It was in the 78th minute of the match, when Calicut midfielder, Federico Boasso received a loose ball on the left flank. He then took a couple of touches before crossing the ball in a calm manner.

The cross could not be stopped by a rushing-out & full-streched Mohammed Arbaz. The ball was met by Leo David, who tapped the ball in for Calicut’s equalizer at home.

Even though there were a flurry of chances after Calicut’s goal, neither team found the back of the net again, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw. The match then went to penalties for the second time in Super League Kerala 2026.

Penalties

This was the second penalty shoot-out of not just the second match week, but also of the entire Super League Kerala 2026.

Malappuram’s Abdul Samed stepped up to take the first penalty of the game. He managed to score, while the opposition keeper went the other way. The first penalty kicker for Calicut was their goal scorer, Leo David, who buried the ball into the left corner making the penalty score 1-1.

Next for Malappuram, Elfrosy stepped up, who hit the crossbar, missing the goal entirely. In a similar fashion, the next penalty taker for Calicut, Villalobos hit the crossbar missing his penalty, keeping the penalty score the same.

For Malappuram, the next penalty was taken by Nedim Hadzic, who scored his penalty in a very composed way, sending the keeper the wrong way. Following in his steps, Calicut’s assister on the night Boazzo stepped up and scored a penalty similar to that of Nedim’s.

The substitute for Malappuram, Abith K also hit the crossbar in an effort to go for the left top corner. Alexis Sosa took the next penalty for Calicut, striking the penalty with all his power and hitting the back of the net.

The last penalty for Malappuram was taken by Adieu Obiang, who scored his penalty despite the obvious pressure not to miss. The winning penalty of the game was taken by the Calicut right back Puia who scored to help Calicut win their second game of Super League Kerala 2026.
