West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari announces free India vs Uruguay tickets for fans who left Messi’s Kolkata GOAT Tour disappointed
India will host Uruguay on October 6.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that around 22,000 fans who were left disappointed and missed out to watch Lionel Messi during his controversial visit to Kolkata last year, will have the opportunity to get free tickets for India’s upcoming international friendly against Uruguay on October 6.
The announcement was made by the West Bengal Chief Minister following India’s 0-4 defeat against Brazil at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan last night, where 51,402 spectators turned up to watch the Blue Tigers take on the Selecao.
Speaking after the game, Suvendu Adhikari said that the victims of the ill-fated Messi GOAT India Tour held in Kolkata last year, will be given a free ticket to watch the two-time FIFA World Cup Winners, Uruguay play at the VYBK Stadium.
He said, “I want to convey this through the media to the people who missed out on the Messi event, some 22,000 of them — we (the West Bengal Government) will announce a WhatsApp number through which they can collect their free tickets for the Uruguay match (on October 6).”
The GOAT India Tour fiasco
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
Argentine star, Lionel Messi’s visit to India last year was nothing short of a landmark for football fans in India.
However, the GOAT India Tour was rather left with a stain that made a bad name among football fans worldwide. The visit of Lionel Messi to Kolkata was chaotic. Messi spent around 15 minutes at the VYBK Stadium, and a large section of the fans missed out on seeing their idol as he was surrounded by politicians, security and VIPs, leaving the ticket-paying fans frustrated.
The situation quickly turned chaotic, with spectators invading the ground and throwing bottles and chairs, damaging the stadium drastically.
The latest announcement is therefore being positioned in such a way that the victims of the Messi GOAT India Tour in Kolkata get another opportunity to experience a major international football match at the same venue.
The government is expected to communicate very shortly with the fans who purchased the Messi GOAT India Tour tickets for Kolkata, with further details, including a WhatsApp number.
“I would ask them to come and watch the match. You will be able to watch a good match in a disciplined manner. They will also be able to return home by metro or by buses of West Bengal Transport Corporation, which will also run late into the night,” added Suvendu Adhikari.
