Anirudh Thapa scored a banger, erupting the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan as the Indian football team equalised against Uruguay in their friendly match in Kolkata.
On 6th October 2026, India are playing against two-time World Cup Champions Uruguay in their final friendly match in the September-October International window, in Kolkata. Uruguay went 1-0 up in the 11th minute of the game courtesy of a Darwin Núñez penalty.

The foul led to a penalty being given in the favour of Uruguay, which their star forward Darwin Núñez converted.
In the next couple of minutes, India got multiple opportunities to convert their attacks and also created many key chances. Once of these chances was in the 22nd minute, when Ryan Williams collected the ball in the midfield area of the pitch.
The Indian number 10 found himself unmarked and free to progress upwards from the central area of the pitch. Right before reaching the defensive box of Uruguay, he took a shot, which was fumbled by the Uruguayan custodian Thiago Cardozo. It was Anirudh Thapa’s brilliant positioning that helped him reach the ball fumbled by Cardozo. The Indian midfielder took his shot and found the back of the net for India.
After scoring the goal, he asked for a ball to celebrate. After getting a ball, he put the ball under his shirt and placed his thumb in his mouth, referencing his partner being pregnant. This is his first goal for the national team since his goal in March 2023, against Myanmar.
