India to play two friendlies in Tajikistan in June FIFA international window

India are set to play the Unity Cup 2026 in May
The Indian football team are all set to travel to Tajikistan during the June FIFA international window to play two crucial friendlies against Palestine football team and Tajikistan football team. The matches are scheduled to be played on June 6 (Palestine) and June 9 (Tajikistan) in Dushanbe, Tajikistan during the FIFA international window.
The All-India Football Federation (AIFF) has informed clubs that India will participate in these two friendlies in Tajikistan on June 6 and June 9. The Indian team may directly travel to Tajikistan for this friendly tour from the UK after participating in the Unity Cup 2026 which is scheduled to end on 31 May.
How does this friendly tour help the Indian team?

The upcoming friendly tour could play a major role in shaping the future of the Indian football team. Indian football team is entering what many fans would describe as a new phase, perhaps even a rebirth. After the disappointment of failing to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup, it most certainly was the end of an old cycle, and now the focus shifts towards building for the future.
For the Indian football fans, this is the beginning of a fresh journey. The priority now should be preparing for the next cycle with a clear long-term vision. Playing international friendlies against stronger opposition is an important step in that process, as it allows India to understand exactly where the team stands both technically and physically on the international stage.
These matches are also crucial for head coach Khalid Jamil, who would likely want to build a stable core group of players capable of staying together for the next three to four years. Continuity within the squad is essential during a rebuilding phase, and regular exposure against competitive opponents will help the players develop chemistry, confidence and consistency.
Before these friendlies, India will also compete in the Unity Cup 2026 in the UK against Nigeria football team, Jamaica football team and Zimbabwe football team. That tournament itself should serve as a valuable learning experience for the squad.
Ideally, the same group of players selected by Khalid Jamil for the Unity Cup should continue together into these friendlies to ensure stability and begin the rebuilding process properly.
India, currently ranked 136th in the FIFA rankings, will face much higher-ranked sides in Palestine football team (95th) and Tajikistan football team (103rd). Competing against teams at that level will provide a clear benchmark for India and offer the players a chance to grow through high-quality international experience.
What’s lined up for Indian football team this year?

The Indian football will participate in some tough tournaments and friendlies this year which should help this team gain more experience and build for the future. Firstly, as soon as the Indian Super League (ISL) ends India will travel to UK to play in the Unity Cup 2026 in May which will be their debut in the tournament, which will feature football powerhouses like Nigeria, Jamaica and Zimbabwe. This tournament could very well help India gain the much-needed experience of being a part of World football and not just Asian football.
After the completion of the Unity Cup 2026, Indian team will likely travel to Tajikistan to play two international friendlies against Palestine and the hosts Tajikistan. This should also help the Indian side work better and build a chemistry among the team as these friendlies will take place in early June just after the Unity Cup 2026.
Next, the Indian team are likely to participate in the upcoming inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 which according to reports, is likely to be played in the international window between September 21 and October 6, 2026, but the details regarding that are still not clear. The participating nations may include Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei, Laos, Timor-Leste, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines. So, this itself becomes another stage where India could very well test themselves.
Later in the year, the Indian team are also scheduled to participate in the SAFF Championship 2026, but nothing is clear as of now on this as the tournament is supposed to be played in the same September-October window when India plays the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. So, the participation is still in question but if the senior team does not play here, there is a possibility that the U-23 may be a part of this tournament or the tournament gets pushed further forward in the year and the senior team plays it.
