India U23 vs Thailand U23 Player Ratings: New boys fail to impress Naushad Moosa

India U23 fell short against Thailand.

Thailand U23 beat the India U23 National Team 4-0 at the Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani. It was by far the most disappointing performance by the India U23 squad, led by Naushad Moosa. Due to some injuries to the club and players being promoted to the senior team, Moosa tried out new players and gave various players a chance to debut.

Although it’s normal to lose when attempting new things, the type of loss and the on-field performance were quite worrying. Nearly all of the goals were the consequence of defensive mistakes, which is unacceptable at this level.

On the other hand, Thailand’s head coach, Thawatchai Damrong, would be delighted with his team’s performance.

India Player Ratings (by Shyam Sundar)-

Dipesh Chauhan – 3/10

Dipesh’s night was terrible. Should have stopped the first goal, dived very quickly in the penalty for the second, and came near to save the other penalty. Made a couple of claims and saves, but in general, it was a horrible game.

Harsh Palande – 6/10

Very good defensively, and maybe our best defender of the day. Made a couple of clearances and kept the opposing winger quiet. A livewire on the left side, but it couldn’t have an effect moving forward.

Ronney Kharbudon – 5/10

Ronney’s first start while wearing Indian colors did not go as planned. Although he was very proactive and made a couple of solid stops, he gave away free kicks in crucial situations, one of which resulted in the opening goal.

Sumit Sharma -3/10

Sumit had a difficult day at the back. He made one key block to deny the hosts an excellent chance in the first half. However, his late tackle conceded the penalties for the second and third goals, and he was struggling defensively.

Raj Basfore – 5/10

Raj’s debut game for the Blue Tigers ended with him being substituted at halftime. Raj, who had to step in for Ricky, struggled in defence & was virtually non-existent offensively. The Chennaiyin defender had an unforgettable debut.

Lalrinliana Hnamte – 5/10

Hnamte, another Indian player who received a caution in the first half, too. He played poorly compared to his own lofty standards. Made a couple of solid blocks and clearances, but his passing was rusty, and he couldn’t keep the ball effectively.

Ayush Chhetri – 4/10

The Indian skipper performed poorly and failed to exert his dominance in the middle. Ayush booked for simulation in the first half & was reluctant to win the second balls, thus his performance today was a replica of what he had shown before.

Vinith Venkatesh – 4/10

One of the few players who had a good attacking mentality and a desire to create some chances. He was always hunting for forward passes and attempting to take on his man, but he couldn’t produce a goal or assist.

Mohammed Aimen – 6/10

Mohammed Aimen in action for India U-23

One of the very few players who looked positive in attack and wanted to make things happen. He was always looking for forward passes and trying to take on his man, but he couldn’t do enough to get a goal or an assist.

Korou Singh – 5/10

Korou’s game wasn’t the finest; his right-back didn’t help either. Had one nice scoring opportunity in the first half, but wasn’t able to control the ball effectively to capitalise.

Alan Saji – 4/10

Not what Alan Saji would have wanted for a debut. His teammates in the midfield and wings failed to provide any opportunities for him, and he was also booked in the first half. Naushad Moosa replaced him at the halftime break with Rahul Raju.

Substitutes:

Vibin Mohanan – 5/10

Vibin had a respectable game in the centre of the park after replacing Vinith Venkatesh at halftime. Although he produced a few line-breaking passes while creating a couple of decent opportunities, his set-pieces today were substandard.

Rahul Raju – 4/10

Rahul Raju, who had been a midfielder at the club level for several years, was used as a striker when he replaced Alan Saji. He had a few opportunities, and if he had done better, he might have scored.

Yaipharemba Chingakham – 4/10

The Classic Football Academy teenager replaced Raj at right back, but then switched to left back after Harsh was forced off. He could have stopped the fourth goal with better defensive work, but as this was his debut, he will improve.

Joseph Justin – 5/10

Justin came on to replace Harsh Palande and played decently. When he entered the game, the opponent was ahead 4-0, and he had little defensive work to do. He should work on his ability to pass and handle the ball.

Thoi Singh – 5/10

Thoi replaced Aimen on the left flank, but in the few minutes he had, he was unable to display a significant impact. His excellent shot from the left wing was saved by opposing custodian Boonloet, but that was all.

Lalthankima – 5/10

The Mohammedan winger was the one who came closest to scoring for India tonight. Lalthankima looked threatening while combining effectively with Kipgen, creating several solid chances in the short minutes he played.

Mohanraj – 5/10

Had a few problems in goal after replacing Dipesh during the last quarter of the game. Made a simple save in the stoppage time but was never challenged further.

Manglenthang Kipgen – 7/10

Punjab FC player Kipgen in action for India

His performance tonight would have left supporters wondering why Naushad Moosa didn’t start Kipgen. The Punjab FC attacker was by far the most impactful player on the pitch, creating opportunities with ease against Thailand’s fatigued defense. After this performance, it would be unjust for Moosa to keep him on the bench in the next games.

Why didn’t Muhammad Suhail, Suhail Bhat and Mohammad Sanan play?

Muhammad Suhail is injured; Sanan is promoted to senior team while Suhail Bhat was not released by his club.

When will the India U-23 team play next?

Fans have to wait till the March International break to see the U-23 boys back inaction again.
