India vs Bangladesh: All time Head-to-Head record

India hold a significant head-to-head advantage over their South Asian rivals.
After India claimed a 3-0 win over the Maldives in their last game on Tuesday, it led to Manolo Marquez recording his first win as Blue Tigers head coach. Historic and recent games between India and Bangladesh

The first fixture between the Indian Football team and the Bangladesh national football team was played on 14 December 1978 in the Asian Games. India won the game 3-0 and would go on an eight-game unbeaten run against the Bengal Tigers. Bangladesh eventually defeated India 2-1 on 26th December 1991 in the South Asian Federation Games.
Indian Football team’s latest loss against Bangladesh came in the 2003 SAFF Championship semifinal. While the game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, Motiur Rahman Munna scored a golden goal for his side in extra time to help them to a 2-1 win as they went on to win their only SAFF Championship that year.
Out of their 10 meetings in the SAFF Championship, India and Bangladesh have faced each other in the final twice. The Blue Tigers won on both occasions (1999 and 2005), registering a 2-0 result on both occasions.
The two nations also faced each other in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier as Bangladesh drew 1-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium while Indian Football team registered a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture. The most recent meeting between the two rivals came in the 2021 SAFF Championship as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The head-to-head record between the two nations is dominated by the Indian national football team. However, a number of games between the sides have ended in a draw. At the moment, Bangladesh are ranked 185th in the FIFA rankings whereas Manolo Marquez’s side are ranked 126th in the FIFA Rankings.

How important is the game against Bangladesh?

Indian Football team’s road to the 2027 AFC Asian Cup will certainly not be easy as they are pitted in Group C alongside Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Only the group winner will qualify for the continental tournament that will be taking place in Saudi Arabia.
Following the home game against Bangladesh, Indian Football team will be travelling to face Hong Kong and Singapore away from home in June and October respectively. Hence, it is important that the Blue Tigers start their campaign in a positive manner, as each point will matter at the end of the six qualifier games.
