India vs Tajikistan: Goalscoring troubles for India & other talking points from the international friendly

India lost 3-1 to Tajikistan in the first friendly game

Having lost both their games in the 2026 Unity Cup, India travelled to Tajikistan to play two friendly games with an eye towards preparation for the SAFF Championship 2026, as per India’s head coach Khalid Jamil.

Here are a few talking points from the first friendly as the Blue Tigers suffered a 3-1 defeat to Tajikistan. The two sides will face each other once again on Tuesday, 9th June.

An unnecessary penalty to concede

Macarton Nickson gave away a penalty early in the first half. The midfielder fouled the Tajikistan player from behind in what seemed to be an unnecessary tackle and a sure shot foul in favour of the hosts.

Sheriddin Boboev stepped up to convert his shot past Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in the ninth minute to give Tajikistan an early lead and they never looked back after that.

A dominant second half display from Tajikistan

The Blue Tigers had a few half-chances after going down in the game; however, they failed to take them as they went into the dressing room 1-0 down at the break.

Post kickoff, the Tajikistan football team dominated early in the second half, and they were soon rewarded for their efforts.

Mekhrubon Karimov scored a header from a freekick in the 62nd minute before Ehson Panjshanbe scored in the 68th minute to give the hosts a 3-0 lead and kill the game.

These two goals in quick succession severely hit their morale as the hosts took complete control of the match.

A consolation from Farukh

With the game slowly inching towards full-time, it looked like India were going to gift Tajikistan a clean sheet in the first of their two friendly matches. However, substitute Farukh Choudhary managed to get a late consolation.

The Chennaiyin FC player converted a late free kick to make the score 3-1 in the 89th minute. While the goal did not change the result, it would surely help Farukh gain some much-needed confidence ahead of the next meeting between the two nations on Tuesday.

Struggles in front of the goal

Keeping Farukh Choudhary’s strike aside, the Indian football team struggled in front of goal once again. It looked like long throw-ins and dead balls were the only realistic attempts that India chased to get a goal against Tajikistan.

The Blue Tigers had scored just four goals in six games in their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualification group, and to add to this, they failed to score a single goal against Jamaica and Zimbabwe in the recently concluded Unity Cup 2026.

With Indian goal scorers still a rarity in the Indian Super League, it seems that India’s problem in front of goal might continue in the near future.
