Oman are ranked 79th while India are 133rd in the latest FIFA rankings

The Indian national football team have had a positive start under Khalid Jamil in the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and company finished second in their group, behind Iran, picking up four points from their three games.

Iran will play Uzbekistan in the final on 8th September to decide the winner of the tournament. Meanwhile, courtesy of their second placed finish in Group B, the Blue Tigers will face Oman in the third place match for the bronze medal.

The Blue Tigers have won just once in their entire history against Oman, with their solitary win coming in 1994. Since then, the Reds have held their own against India, dominating this fixture. Here is what happened in the previous five meetings between these two sides.

Oman 3-0 India – FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifiers

Playing at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman dominated and beat India in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers on 13th October 2015. The Blue Tigers held their own in a goalless first half, but the Reds came out with vigour in the second half.

Ahmed Kano scored in the 55th minute before Abdul Aziz Al Maqbali scored his brace in the 67th and 84th minute to get all three points in the qualifiers.

India 0-0 Oman – International Friendly

On 27th December 2018, Stephen Constantine’s Indian football team put up a gritty performance against Oman in an international friendly. The Blue Tigers played out a goalless draw at the Baniyas Stadium in Abu Dhabi as Anas Edathodika and Sandesh Jhingan put in a brilliant shift to guarantee a clean sheet behind closed doors.

India 1-2 Oman – FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers

India welcomed Oman to the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati for the first leg of their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier game between the two nations on 5th September 2019. Sunil Chhetri scored in the 24th minute to secure the Blue Tigers a 1-0 lead at half time.

The Blue Tigers played well in the second half and it seemed that they would pick up all three points. However, Rabia Al Alawi had not read the same script as the Oman forward scored in the 82nd and 90th minute to stun the hosts and pick up all three points.

Oman 1-0 India – FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers

Seeking revenge, India travelled to the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman for the second leg of the World Cup qualifiers on 19th November 2019. Igor Stimac’s side fought hard but were not able to break down the Oman defence.

Muhsen Al Ghassani on the other hand found the target in the 33rd minute Oman remained resolute and picked up a double over the Blue Tigers. These losses ensured that India were knocked out of contention for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

What happened when Indian football team last faced Oman?

The latest encounter between the Blue Tigers and Oman was played on 25th March 2021 at the Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai. Manvir Singh found the back of the net for Igor Stimac’s side, but a Chinglensana Singh own goal ended the game in a 0-0 draw.

India and Oman will meet in the CAFA Nations Cup third-place match on September 8.
