The Blue Tigers are likely to play Brazil, Panama and New Zealand this year.

India are set for a rare run of international fixtures against teams that featured at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has signed a letter of intent with Panama for an international friendly during the September-October FIFA window, according to a report by TOI.

The match is scheduled to take place on the weekend of September 26-27, although the venue has not been finalized yet.

India are already confirmed to face Brazil in Kolkata on October 3rd. They will then travel to New Zealand for two away fixtures in November.

As a result, the Blue Tigers are on course to face at least four matches against FIFA World Cup opponents this year, with another October fixture still being discussed.

“There is a high possibility of an international friendly against another World Cup opponent on Oct 6,” a senior AIFF official told TOI.

“Brazil is done and Panama have agreed in principle to play in India. Talks are ongoing with three countries who featured at the last World Cup (for the third friendly during this window). A good result against any of the World Cuppers can boost Indian football’s morale and improve the rankings significantly.”

India agree in principle for Panama friendly

Panama, currently ranked 44th in the FIFA rankings, featured at the FIFA World Cup 2026 but failed to progress from the group stage and book a place in the knockouts. They were drawn in a difficult group alongside England, Croatia and Ghana. Despite their early elimination, Panama provided stern competition against some of the tournament’s established sides.

The Central American nation is coached by Denmark-born Thomas Christiansen and has continued to develop into a competitive side on the international stage.

Their proposed trip to India would give Khalid Jamil’s team another opportunity to test themself against FIFA World Cup-level opposition.

Following the friendly in India, Panama are expected to travel to Japan for the 2026 Kirin Cup. They will join hosts Japan, Ecuador and New Zealand in the invitational tournament.

A friendly against Cape Verde?

Before the Panama development, reports had suggested that India were likely to face Cape Verde on October 6, three days after the Brazil friendly.

However, the proposed Cape Verde match has not been officially confirmed by the AIFF. Cape Verde enjoyed an impressive 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. They held eventual champions Spain to a goalless draw before taking Argentina to extra time in the last 16.

A fixture against Cape Verde could therefore offer India another high-quality test immediately after the Brazil game.

With the AIFF now agreeing a letter of intent with Panama, the final composition of India’s September-October schedule remains unclear.

India’s biggest confirmed fixture of the period remains the meeting with Brazil. The Blue Tigers will take on the five-time world champions at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on October 3rd.

Preparations for the match have already begun, with a five-member delegation from the Brazilian Football Confederation visiting Kolkata to inspect the facilities and arrangements.

The delegation assessed the stadium, training facilities, accommodation, security arrangements and other match-related infrastructure. Brazil are expected to travel with a delegation of more than 90 people for the fixture.

India to face New Zealand in November

New Zealand will host India for two friendlies in November.

India will also face New Zealand twice in November. The first match is scheduled for November 12 in Auckland, followed by another fixture in Christchurch on November 15th.

New Zealand featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will therefore provide India with two more opportunities to compete against World Cup opposition.

If the Panama friendly and both New Zealand matches go ahead as scheduled, India will have four confirmed fixtures against teams from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A further October friendly could increase that number even further.

A packed international calendar awaits

The upcoming schedule could prove significant for Khalid Jamil and his squad.

India will face Panama in September, Brazil in October and New Zealand twice in November. The team could also have another fixture around the October 6th date that was previously being linked with Cape Verde.

Playing against several FIFA World Cup participants would give India valuable exposure to different styles and levels of international football. It could also provide the Blue Tigers with opportunities to improve their FIFA ranking and build confidence.
