Indian Football Team Rival Watch: Tajikistan

Blue Tigers will face Tajikistan on June 5 and June 9
The Indian Football Team will be back in action when they take part in two friendly matches against the Tajikistan football team at Hisor in the June (2026) international break.
Right before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Indian football fans will be able to get a glimpse of their team in action – as the Blue Tigers aim to get back to winning ways after some disappointing recent results.
However, India will face a stern test against a Tajikistan side that has enjoyed a resurgence in form over the past six months. The hosts have built strong momentum during this period and will be eager to continue their upward trajectory on home soil.
Tajikistan were able to secure qualification into the 2027 AFC Asian Cup with relative ease and have built up a reputation for being able to play some stellar football under head coach Igor Angelovski as well.
With both teams aiming to make their mark in the June (2026) international break by winning these two friendly matches, here we have a closer look at the Tajikistan side before their matches against India in the upcoming international friendlies.
A brief look at Tajikistan

Tajikistan have been playing at the international level since 1992, and they’ve done a pretty good job at establishing themselves as a hard-working national team in the AFC ever since.
In their first few decades as a national team, Tajikistan mostly prospered in friendlies and other tournaments – as they were only able to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup for the first time in 2023.
Tajikistan made an impressive impact on their AFC Asian Cup debut, reaching the quarterfinal and earning widespread praise for their performances.
While they are yet to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, they have enjoyed considerable success at the continental level. Notably, Tajikistan won the AFC Challenge Cup in 2006 and finished runners-up in the 2008 edition, which was hosted in India.
They have won the King’s Cup and Merdeka Tournament once in the past, and they started to really shine as a national team after the turn of 2010.
The Tajikistan side are currently ranked in the 103rd position in the FIFA World Rankings, with their highest achievement in FIFA rankings being achieved in February 2024, when they reached the 99th position.
Head coach

The Tajikistan national team saw North Macedonian manager Igor Angelovski take over their head coach helm earlier in 2026 and he is ready to take them to the next level in the upcoming years.
For Angelovski, the matches against India will be one of his first games as the Tajikistan head coach and an opportunity for him to test how his tactics can work with the Crowns as well.
Angelovski is a highly experienced coach who has well over 13 years of managerial experience. He gained most of his reputation as the head coach of the North Macedonia national team, whom he managed during a memorable period from 2015 to 2021.
Under his guidance, the North Macedonia side were able to qualify for the Euro 2020 tournament – their first-ever qualification for the major European competition.
After leaving the North Macedonia role in 2021, Angelovski would go on to have short stints with clubs like Gorica (Croatia), Caspiy (Kazakhstan) and Ethnikos Achna (Cyprus) before bagging the Tajikistan job earlier this year.
The only honours won by him in his coaching career were helping Rabotnicki win the 2013-14 Macedonian First League, as well as the Macedonian Cup titles in 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.
The 50-year-old head coach definitely has a lot of variations to his tactics and formation. He’s normally shown a desire to use the 4-2-3-1 formation in recent years, but has also been able to expertly set his teams up in a 3-5-2 formation as well.
Igor likes his side to keep a compact defensive shape to lure in opponents, before hurting them on fast-paced counter-attacks and be slick with their build-up play to be a terrorizing force.
Players to Watchout
Shervoni Mabatshoev

A really versatile player in his own regard, Shervoni Mabatshoev has proven himself as a valuable player for the Tajikistan national team in recent years. He currently plays for Malaysian side Terengganu FC, having managed seven goal contributions (four goals, three assists) in 17 appearances for them in the 2025-26 season.
Mabatshoev has done a great job as part of the Tajikistan side recently, having scored 13 goals in 39 appearances for them – including five goals in their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualification matches that helped them qualify for the major tournament.
Mabatshoev can be a dangerous customer because of his versatility and ability to thrive in different positions, as he’s normally a menacing threat out wide – troubling defenders with his dribbles and trickery.
He’ll look to elevate Tajikistan’s threat in the upcoming matches against India, delighting the home fans with his attractive playing style and trying to add more international goals to his name.
Shahrom Samiev

The most experienced forward chosen in the Tajikistan squad for the upcoming friendlies against India, Shahrom Samiev, will definitely be aiming to add more goals to his tally in these two matches.
The 25-year-old forward actually had a disappointing 2025-26 season with Iraqi side Al-Karma, being able to bag only an assist in 10 appearances in the Iraq Stars League. That is why he’ll be hungry and motivated to regain his goal-scoring touch against the Blue Tigers, having already boasted a pretty good record for Tajikistan.
Indeed, Shahrom has scored 12 goals in 46 appearances for the Crowns in his international career, having three goals in his last five international appearances for them as well.
The 25-year-old will be eager to impress the head coach by proving his ability to score clutch goals and get into the right positions to threaten India, as he’s quite desperate to regain his goal-scoring form in the upcoming matches.
What to expect from this clash?

As Tajikistan are playing with home advantage, they will definitely look to bring entertainment to their fans by playing progressive, fast-paced attacking football. They will be respectful of how defensively sturdy the Indian side can be under Khalid Jamil, but they’ll look to disrupt their defensive organisation by piling bodies forward and being innovative with their build-up play to force errors.
Tajikistan are likely to dominate the friendly matches against India, as they’re high on confidence after being unbeaten in their last six matches – having scored an impressive 15 goals in that period as well and only conceding three goals.
They’ll look to maintain their compact shape to limit the number of chances that the visitors can create, as well as look to hurt them on transitions and by creating quick moves to outwit their defenders.
Knowing that winning the friendlies could have an impact on their place on the FIFA World Rankings, Tajikistan will definitely take these games seriously and look to properly dominate them. They will, of course, need to be clinical in taking up the chances created to really hurt the visitors and be able to snatch some important victories.
For India, it’ll be a case of showcasing immense resilience and willpower to be able to thrive under the pressure of facing Tajikistan in their own yard.
If they end up making too many mistakes or let their guard down, the Crowns can absolutely roll over them to get two commanding victories to pile on more misery for the Blue Tigers.
