Indian Football Team Rival Watch: Uruguay
La Celeste will face India at the VYBK Stadium on October 6, 2026.
The Indian national team have been in for a bumper ride during the September–October international window, with three FIFA World Cup-playing nations lined up as opponents within just 12 days. Now, the Blue Tigers are nearing the end of this challenging run as they prepare for the final chapter of this historic journey.
India will take on Uruguay, who are ranked 20th in the FIFA World Rankings, at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on October 6, 2026. The international friendly is scheduled to kick off at 19:30 IST.
Khalid Jamil and his boys have so far lived up to the excitement and expectations of Indian football fans. One could even argue that they have exceeded expectations, having secured a draw against Panama in the opening game before losing 0-4 to Brazil in the second.
This was despite widespread predictions that India would suffer a heavy defeat, potentially conceding double-digit goals against Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Despite failing to register a win in either game, Khalid Jamil’s side have displayed a positive mentality and looked dangerous on the counterattack, particularly through quick transitions. This is an encouraging development, given the lack of attacking output the team has displayed over the past 12–18 months.
With renewed hope and one final challenge awaiting them, the Blue Tigers will now face La Celeste. Let’s take a look at Uruguay’s recent form, head coach and key players ahead of the game.

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

Uruguay have endured a difficult run in 2026 so far. They began the year with two draws against England and Algeria during the March international window. The two-time World Cup champions then entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup without playing any warm-up friendlies, following a request from then-head coach Marcelo Bielsa.
In hindsight, that decision backfired unfortunately. La Celeste failed to win a single game and were eliminated in the group stage after finishing third with just two points from three matches.
During the current international window, Uruguay played two friendlies against Asian opposition ahead of their trip to India.
Their first outing ended in a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Japan, during which they conceded twice in stoppage time. However, they bounced back emphatically in their next game, securing a convincing 4-1 victory over South Korea.
Who is Uruguay’s head coach?

Following Uruguay’s group-stage exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Uruguayan Football Association decided to part ways with Marcelo Bielsa and made the bold decision to promote Diego Forlán, the former head coach of the country’s U-20 team, to lead the senior national side.
For many Indian football fans, Forlán’s return to Indian soil will evoke memories of ISL’s marquee-player era. The former Manchester United forward represented Mumbai City FC during the 2016 ISL season, bringing considerable star power to the league.
Although Diego Forlán endured disappointing managerial spells with Penarol and Atenas in 2019 and 2021, respectively, the Uruguayan Football Association will hope that the country’s third-highest goalscorer can lead the national team back to its former glory.
Players to watch out for
José Giménez
One of the most experienced players in Uruguay’s current set-up, José Giménez has made 100 appearances for the national team, placing him ninth on the country’s all-time appearance list.
An aerially dominant center-back, José Giménez is well-versed in Diego Simeone’s defensive philosophy. His aggressive, proactive approach to defending and willingness to contest both aerial and ground duels have made him a key figure at Atletico Madrid, for whom he has made over 250 appearances.
Currently playing for RC Deportivo in La Liga, José Giménez is expected to lead Uruguay’s defense. His ability to organize the backline and marshal his fellow defenders will be crucial against an Indian attack that has shown its threat through runs in behind the opposition defense and quick transitions against both Panama and Brazil.
Giorgian de Arrascaeta
With over 60 appearances for Uruguay, Giorgian de Arrascaeta is an experienced presence in the team’s midfield. He made his international debut in 2014, aged 20, in a friendly against Japan, providing the assist for the winning goal.
Primarily an attacking midfielder, De Arrascaeta is versatile enough to operate as a central midfielder or on either wing. His close control and dribbling in tight spaces, combined with his exceptional vision and ability to play line-breaking passes in the final third, make him one of Uruguay’s key creative outlets.
He is also a dangerous set-piece specialist, known for his precise deliveries and ability to make late runs into the penalty area.
These qualities have helped him score 14 international goals since his debut. In Uruguay’s most recent victory over South Korea, De Arrascaeta contributed a goal and an assist, proving the threat he poses in the final third.
Darwin Núñez

The failed wonderkid, or does he still have time to prove himself? Darwin Núñez was once among Europe’s most highly rated strikers during his time at Benfica. However, following his big money move to Liverpool, he became better known for his missed chances and viral moments than for his goalscoring exploits.
His subsequent move to Al-Hilal did little to revive his fortunes. He now plays for Al-Diriyah FC in the Saudi Pro League on loan from Al-Hilal, meaning he is familiar with Asian playing conditions ahead of Uruguay’s trip to India.
Darwin Núñez has scored 15 goals in 43 appearances for Uruguay, including a brace in the recent victory over South Korea. His strengths lie in his pressing, intelligent off-the-ball movement and ability to deceive defenders with his runs.
Combined with his pace and physicality, these attributes make him particularly dangerous in quick transitions.
However, improving his finishing and converting chances more consistently will be key if he wants to rediscover the form that once made him one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers.
What was the result in Uruguay’s recent game?
Uruguay registered a 4-1 win over South Korea in their most recent international friendly.
When is the India vs Uruguay clash scheduled?
India’s historic clash against Uruguay is expected to take place on 6th October 2026 at the Salt Lake Stadium (VYBK) with kick-off scheduled for 19:30 IST.
Which club does Darwin Núñez play for?
Uruguay’s striker Darwin Núñez plays for Al-Diriyah FC in the Saudi Pro League on loan from Al-Hilal
