“It was disappointing" - Sandesh Jhingan on being dropped from India squad
Sandesh Jhingan was not selected for India’s matches against Brazil, Panama & Uruguay.
The Indian National Football Team is all set for the Sept-Oct international window, where The Blue Tigers will be hosting Panama, Brazil & Uruguay for a friendly match against each team.
The Indian Head Coach Khalid Jamil announced his 26 man squad for the friendlies on 31st August, 2026. Apart from a few first time call ups and overall quality of the squad, the biggest question raised with regards to his squad selection was the omission of FC Goa and Former Indian Team Captain, Sandesh Jhingan.
The 33 year old has been a staple for The Blue Tigers since his debut all the way back in 2015. He has made over 77 appearances for the team and has also scored 6 goals while representing his nation, which is why his exclusion from the squad raised more than just a few eyebrows.

Jhingan’s passion for his country can never be enough, as in India’s match against Syria during the AFC Asian Cup, he played with a torn knee, he also played with a bangdaged head against UAE in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. Speaking on him representing the country despite the injuries he sustains during matches, he said “the most beautiful feeling is to represent the national team.”
In an interview with TOI, Sandesh said, “When I saw the list, of course, it was disappointing; I was full of emotions; it was a human reaction (about his exclusion).” Anyone who has seen me play for the National Team knows how much I love representing my country.”
“I respect the coach’s decision”
The 33-year-old did not expect to be dropped from the team, considering he led the team during their previous two friendlies against Tajikistan in June 2026 & in the Unity Cup earlier this year. He also played for the team during the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup, where India finished 3rd.
Speaking further on his omission from the squad, he said, “In life, there are always ups and downs. I respect the coach’s decision. But as a player, I know what I have to do next: work harder to become a better footballer, a better version of myself. In life and my career, I have learned that the only way forward is through hard work. When the coach sits down to select the next team, I want to be in contention.”

Team India will face 3 World Cup participating nations in this upcoming window. The Blue Tigers will face Panama (who are ranked 44th), Brazil (ranked 5th) & Uruguay (ranked 20th). Brazil will be the highest FIFA-ranked national team that India will face in their history.
When asked about his opinions on the fixtures, Jhingan commented, “It’s a great opportunity for us as a national team to provide inspiration and hope to the fans,” said Jhingan.
“A good result here can create positivity and bring everyone together. The team has the potential. I will always remain a passionate supporter of the team”.
