Indian Football Team to play four-nation Unity Cup in London

India are currently ranked 136th in the FIFA Men’s world rankings.
India’s senior men’s national team will compete in the Unity Cup in London from May 26 to 30, with Nigeria and Jamaica emerging as the likely high-profile opponents. According to reports in Times of India, The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has confirmed the participation of the country in the four-nation tournament.
While the fourth team is yet to be confirmed, reports suggest another African nation will complete the lineup. The knockout format means the Blue Tigers could face either Nigeria or Jamaica in the semifinal, followed by a final or third-place match.
Khalid Jamil’s side enters the tournament after a 2-1 win over Hong Kong in Kochi in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. Ryan Williams scored on debut inside four minutes, while Akash Mishra added the second, securing India’s only win of the campaign. That result ended a seven-match wait for a regulation-time victory and provided a much-needed reset after exits from both World Cup and Asian Cup qualification pathways.
What is the Unity Cup?

The Unity Cup is a short knockout competition built around teams with strong diaspora links in the United Kingdom. It features two semifinals, followed by a final and a third-place playoff, all within a five-day window.
Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago participated in the previous edition, while the original tournament in 2004 included the Republic of Ireland.
India’s inclusion this year marks their first appearance and aligns with the large fan base in the UK. The team last toured England in 2000, when Bhaichung Bhutia led the side in matches against Fulham, West Bromwich Albion, and Bangladesh.
The Blue Tigers went down 0-2 to Fulham, then played out a goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion, before finishing the tour with a 1-0 win over Bangladesh in Leicester.
India rise five spots in FIFA rankings

India have moved up from 141st to 136th in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings. The win over 153rd-ranked Hong Kong added 11.51 coefficient points, taking their total to 1091.03.
The climb also reflects results elsewhere, with Malaysia and Turkmenistan dropping points and the Central African Republic remaining inactive. Consequently, the Blue Tigers improved from 28th to 25th in the AFC standings.
For Khalid Jamil, this shift offers measurable progress after a difficult run. More importantly, the Unity Cup now provides competitive fixtures against higher-ranked teams like Nigeria (21st) and Jamaica (71st). With no scheduled matches after this international window, these games will play a key role in maintaining rhythm and testing the squad against stronger, more physical opposition.
