How can Indian football team line up for their Unity Cup 2026 opener against Jamaica?

India is making their Unity Cup debut against Jamaica.
India are all set to make their debut in the Unity Cup in this edition of the tournament. The Blue Tigers will take on mighty Jamaica in semifinal 2 of the tournament; meanwhile, Nigeria will face Zimbabwe in semifinal 1.
The stakes of this match are very high. If India somehow manages to beat Jamaica in this match, they will go on to the tournament’s final, which will be a very good achievement, keeping in mind that it’s not a strong squad on paper, at least.
And if India loses against Jamaica, they’ll go on to play the third-place playoff match against the team that loses the semifinal 1
As India gear up for this mammoth opponent, let us take a look at how India could line up against Jamaica, keeping in mind the previous starting eleven under head coach Khalid Jamil.
Formation: 4-4-2
GK- Gurpreet Singh Sandhu

The experienced Indian international, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, should surely start the match between the sticks for India, keeping in mind the attacking threat that Jamaica possesses. There are 2 more goalkeepers available (Albino Gomes and Hrithik Tiwari), but we know the importance of a big-game player in these kinds of games.
We have seen that Gurpreet has been very good in big games for the national team, and who could possibly forget the Qatar game, where the keeper kept India alive single-handedly?
LB- Akash Mishra

Akash Mishra is one of the finest fullbacks in the country, and his performances for Mumbai City FC this ISL season have once again proved his quality.
Him starting at leftback makes perfect sense, especially because of how effective he is both defensively and offensively going forward. A modern day fullback with excellent attacking intent and work rate, Akash should undoubtedly be in the starting lineup as he was very good in the last match against Hong Kong and also got his name on the scoresheet.
CB- Sandesh Jhingan

Perhaps the most important part of this defence is Sandesh Jhingan. With his experience, India can benefit very much against Jamaica defensively and also as a team.
This inexperienced Indian side needs an experienced leader to lead them, and there can be no better option than Jhingan in the team at this point in time. So, Jhingan starting in the match is almost a necessity at this time for the team.
CB- Rahul Bheke

With Anwar Ali missing out on the Unity Cup due to an injury, the spot for the second centre back opens up. And keeping in mind how Khalid Jamil has lined up India previously, Rahul Bheke is expected to be the defensive partner of Sandesh Jhingan.
Although there are a couple of names that can come in, like Pramveer, the experience that Rahul Bheke brings is very important, and perhaps the right back has to play as a centre back in this match.
RB- Nikhil Poojary

Nikhil Poojary has been a huge asset on the right side for the Indian football team, although injury concerns forced him to miss a few matches in the past.
He is expected to slot directly into the starting lineup as rightback against Jamaica. His chemistry with Lallianzuala Chhangte on the right side has worked brilliantly for the national team in the past, and India will once again rely on that partnership to create attacking opportunities and also look to be stable defensively.

LM- Rahim Ali

Again, with many key players missing out from the national team due to unfortunate circumstances, the Left midfield/wing position is also up for grabs and there are a couple of names like Noufal and Edmund who can be strong contenders but taking note of the players that Khalid Jamil prefer, Rahim Ali is most likely to start on the left flank for the Blue Tigers.
This season in ISL, Rahim Ali scored 3 goals and provided 2 assists for Odisha FC. The forward can also play according to the requirements of the team; he can move centrally or even drop deep defensively if needed.
CM- Ricky Shabong

With not many options left for Khalid Jamil in the midfield, Ricky Shabong will most likely make his national team debut in the midfield pivot role against Jamaica.
And perhaps this could be the opportunity for the young Punjab FC midfielder to prove himself at the international level.
CM- Jeakson Singh

The most experienced midfielder in the squad simply has to start this match, and that decision feels like a complete no brainer. With limited options available in midfield, Jeakson Singh is expected to feature in the double pivot alongside Ricky Shabong.
His defensive contribution could prove crucial for the Indian team, especially with the constant attacking threat that Jamaica possesses.
RM- Lallianzuala Chhangte

Lallianzuala Chhangte remains a key part of the Indian team and should, without a doubt, start on the right flank in this game. His experience, pace and explosive acceleration make him one of India’s biggest attacking threats, especially in counterattacking situations, which India will have during the match.
Chhangte’s ability to drive forward with speed and create chances could be extremely important against Jamaica, and he will also look to build a strong attacking combination with Ryan Williams upfront.
ST – Farukh Choudhary

Farukh Choudhary is not a natural striker and usually operates on the left flank, but his work rate and intensity on the pitch are qualities that make him a perfect choice for Khalid Jamil’s football.
With Khalid Jamil preferring players who contribute heavily both on and off the ball, Farukh starting upfront remains a strong possibility, although he will face competition from Edmund, who has been very good for East Bengal this season.
Farukh is also expected to drop deeper into midfield areas to help link up play and create spaces for Ryan Williams and the wingers to exploit in attacking transitions, and will most probably drop deep to help defensively as well.
ST- Ryan Williams

A fresh face in this squad who has brought change to this team is Ryan Williams. Having scored already on his debut for India against Hong Kong and registering a win, he will for sure start the game and will perhaps be the reason for many Indian football fans to watch the match as well.
His eye for goal, dribbling ability and finishing could prove extremely crucial against Jamaica, especially in a game where India are unlikely to get too many chances. The Blue Tigers will need to be clinical in front of goal and make the most of every opportunity that comes their way, and Ryan Williams can be the key for that.
