The Stakes

India

The Indian football team are coming into the Unity Cup on the back of an impressive win over Hong Kong. The Blue Tigers, however, will be facing opponents of a much higher quality in the Unity Cup, and they’ll need to bring their absolute A-game to the table to be able to get any kind of positive result in the competition.

Khalid Jamil will need to do something special with the overall shape of his side, to keep a really sturdy defensive line to frustrate the Jamaican side.

He’ll also need his players to be able to work extremely hard to keep up with the intensity of Jamaica’s game and be clinical in converting their chances to be able to get a positive result.

A win for the Blue Tigers will be huge validation of how things are going in the right direction under Jamil, but a crushing loss would be a humbling that could indicate how far behind the Indian side are to such challenging opposition.

The Jamaica national team are still hurting after failing to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026, having lost to DR Congo in the World Cup inter-confederation playoffs clash. The Reggae Boyz did an admirable job at reaching the playoff final, but were ultimately heartbroken after a crushing loss.

They look to bounce back from that defeat by winning the Unity Cup title and will look to take out the majority of their frustration on the Indian football team.

The Jamaican side will aspire to keep a strong defensive shape and dominate the possession. However, they’ll need to be creative and efficient in the final third to be able to grab a big win.

A big victory for Jamaica will help them rediscover their confidence and push for the Unity Cup title, but a loss to the Indian side can be particularly demotivating for them.

The Indian squad for the Unity Cup only consists of 18 players after Mohun Bagan SG called back their players who were initially selected for the squad. Anwar Ali also had to withdraw from Khalid Jamil’s squad because of an injury, and Ashique Kuruniyan is also unavailable. However, three replacements – Mohammed Sanan, Vikram Partap Sing and Louis Macarton Nickson are still stuck with VISA processing issues.

Jamaica’s squad for the Unity Cup 2026 includes 11 newly called players in a makeshift unit. This includes Manchester City’s bright youngster Caelan Cadamarteri, who is in line to make his international debut for the Reggae Boyz in the Unity Cup.

Ryan Williams (India)

Ryan Williams had an international debut to remember for the Indian football team in their recent clash against Hong Kong, scoring a brilliant goal to inspire their win.

The Bengaluru FC forward is coming off a decent Indian Super League (ISL) campaign in which he scored four goals in 12 games, including goals against the likes of East Bengal and Jamshedpur FC.

Williams, who scored in his last two appearances for Bengaluru FC, looks to maintain his impressive form at the Unity Cup.

The 32-year-old will aim to be a thorn for the defenders, using his speed and tricky movement to disrupt Jamaica’s defensive structure. He will be urged to look to create chances, but Williams’ main objective will be to slip at the end of chances and finish them off clinically to help India get a stunning win.

Kaheim Dixon (Jamaica)

Kaheim Dixon will actually be able to play with ‘home advantage’, as he is a current player for Charlton Athletic, who play their home matches at The Valley. The 21-year-old right-winger had a pretty decent loan spell with Crawley Town in the 2025-26 season, and he’ll be aiming to make good use of his experience of knowing the English football scene.

Dixon has scored three goals in 23 appearances for Jamaica in his career, and he’s desperate to add more to his tally to remain a regular member of the Reggae Boyz squad for the long-term.

Dixon aims to make good use of his speed and ability to slip past defenders against the Blue Tigers, whose defenders he will aim to torment with his unpredictability. Dixon will be tasked with getting to the end of chances smartly and finishing them off in a ruthless fashion to help Jamaica reach the Unity Cup final in style.
