India handed fresh setback with Ryan Williams doubtful for Zimbabwe clash and Tajikistan friendlies

India arrived for the Unity Cup 2026 with a depleted 22-member squad.
Indian senior men’s football team have been handed another major setback during their Unity Cup 2026 campaign, with Ryan Williams now doubtful for the remainder of the international window because of a hamstring injury.
The winger is unlikely to feature in India’s third-place playoff clash against Zimbabwe and could also miss the upcoming twin international friendlies against Tajikistan in June.
The injury concern adds to India’s growing list of problems for head coach Khalid Jamil during a difficult tour that has already been heavily impacted by withdrawals and fitness issues.
India fall to Jamaica in Unity Cup semi-final

India suffered a 0-2 defeat against Jamaica in the Unity Cup 2026 semi-final at The Valley in London on Wednesday night. The Reggae Boyz took control early after Courtney Clarke scored a brilliant long-range effort in the eighth minute following a defensive lapse from the Blue Tigers.
Jamaica looked dangerous throughout the opening half and repeatedly exposed spaces in India’s defence with their pace and direct attacking play. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu produced several important saves to prevent the scoreline from becoming heavier before the break.
Although India struggled to create clear chances in the first half, Khalid Jamil’s side showed far more attacking intent after the interval. The Blue Tigers briefly believed they had found a route back into the match, only for the move to be ruled out for offside. However, India’s hopes faded in the 78th minute when Kaheim Dixon produced an excellent solo goal to seal Jamaica’s place in the final.
India will now take on Zimbabwe in the third-place playoff match.
Ryan Williams’ injury adds to India’s concerns

Despite the disappointing result, Ryan Williams remained one of the few positives for India during the contest. The winger worked hard throughout the first half and tried to provide energy in attack as India attempted to settle into the game.
However, concerns emerged shortly before the hour mark when Williams was seen struggling physically. In the 58th minute, the attacker walked off gingerly alongside the team physio, who immediately signalled for a substitution. He was replaced a minute later, raising fears of a possible muscle injury.
Initial indications now suggest that Williams has suffered a hamstring issue, making him highly unlikely to play against Zimbabwe. The injury has also cast serious doubt over his availability for India’s upcoming tour of Tajikistan.
India arrived at Unity Cup with depleted squad
India’s preparations for the Unity Cup had already been disrupted before the tournament even began. The squad travelling to London was reduced to only 18 players after eight of Mohun Bagan players were withdrawn in the last moment with seven of them making it to the final squad.
Mohun Bagan SG recalled their players despite them initially joining the national camp, while defender Anwar Ali also pulled out because of injury. Ashique Kuruniyan was another player who was dropped from Khalid Jamil’s plans owing to fitness concerns.
As a result, midfielder Macarton Nickson and defender Nikhil Barla were called up to join the squad on May 26 in order to strengthen the group ahead of the competition.
India later added forwards Mohammed Sanan and Vikram Partap Singh to the travelling squad as well, with both youngsters joining the team in London on May 27 and featuring in the match as well.
