"It won’t be an easy game": Khalid Jamil warns India ahead of Uruguay clash on 6th October

Blue Tigers faced a strong defeat against Brazil

India are looking to finish off their memorable September-October (2026) window with a positive result against South American heavyweights Uruguay on Tuesday (6 October, 2026).

It’ll be only the second meeting between these two sides and the first since the 1982 Nehru Cup, with the Blue Tigers aiming to get at least a draw or a shock win to further validate their improvement under Khalid Jamil.

The Indian gaffer is having to pick up his players after their recent 4-0 loss to Brazil, and Jamil is also not impressed by the lack of recovery time for his players after that game on Saturday (3 October). Ahead of the Uruguay clash.

He stated:  “After the last game, we’ve had little recovery time. We’ll play a strong team; Uruguay have a good coach and high-quality players. I’ve seen their last two matches; they’ve played really well. They’re well rested too; it won’t be an easy game, but a pretty hard game.”

Khalid Jamil on Uruguay threat

Jamil had some promising words about the Uruguay side, considering them a high-quality opponent as he said: “Talking about them, they have quality players. Like Brazil, all the players of Uruguay are high quality. They have an experienced coach, who has played here in India and has a good idea of playing here. So it won’t be easy for us. We’ve played two games where we’ve played really well, but we must finish this window on a good note.”

“They have been able to get a big win over South Korea in the last game. They have a really good team and a coach who has experience in Indian football. They have foreigners who are playing in good leagues, so the prospect of getting a positive result will be vital for us,” he also claimed.

What India needs to improve for Uruguay clash

The India boss also spoke about aspects about India’s game that he wants to see improved against Uruguay.

As he stated: “I felt we had a lack of concentration in the Brazil game. So I feel that in this game, we must have good concentration from the 90th minute. You must have that belief that, yes, you can get a good result. We’re playing on home ground; we’ve had a bit less time for recovery. I hope the players will be ready tomorrow.”

“We can’t concede early goals and go with the flow of the game. We’ll play against a good team, so one mistake can cost us very badly. We have to be very careful, not to take this team lightly at all. We are playing against a quality team that is attacking-wise and defensively, and has very experienced players. Forlan is one of the best coaches, so we must be careful in all aspects,” he further added.

Team selection and more attacking football in recent games

When asked if he aspires to stick with the same starting XI from the Brazil clash against Uruguay.

Jamil replied: “We have practice today; we’ll evaluate everyone, and whoever is looking sharpest will be playing. Sometimes it happens when you give others opportunities.”

“All the players must take responsibility, not just the ones who are playing. Even the coaching staff must complete their job, and it’s my duty to improve the players. If some players aren’t playing well, I have to motivate them to make them sharp for this game – because for the Uruguay game, the players have to be sharp.”

Under Jamil, India have started showing more courage in trying to create more attacking chances against challenging opponents in recent games.

Upon questions on if he’s ushering in a new style for India, he stated: “All the credits goes to the players. I just give them information and they decide how to approach matches. Because we have attacking players, that is why we decided to attack in the last few matches. Everything goes to the players, and the positive performances are because of them only.”

Goalkeeper position situation

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu had a poor outing for India against Brazil, making silly errors for their first two goals. Despite that, Jamil is giving him a lot of support and on questions about India No. 1 changing against Uruguay.

He claimed: “Yes, we’ll see who is doing well in training, and those who impress will continue to play. It’s very open; everyone will get chances, and those who are doing the best will be used. It’s not the end of the road for Gurpreet. Maybe he starts against Uruguay; we’ll see how he performs in training and pick accordingly.”

Counter-attacking threat and message for ISL clubs

"We want to be a team which is difficult to play": Gurpreet Singh Sandhu & Khalid Jamil address media ahead of India vs Panama

Even though India have looked promising on counter-attacks in recent games, they’ve mostly been just Ryan Williams and Manvir Singh in the opposition final third.

When asked if the two forwards should get more help with more players coming forward on the transitions, Jamil replied: “Our approach for this game will be different. Uruguay are a physically strong side; we must match them. They are tactically good as well. Depending on the situation, we must act. If it’s required to defend, we’ll defend, and if required to attack – we’ll do that. According to the situation, we must adapt.”

Finally, when asked whether he wants the Indian Super League (ISL) side to play his attacking players in their natural positions on the frontline.

Jamil stated: “Yes, I’m very happy that the clubs released their players. I cannot ask them to specifically play the Indian players in the attacking positions. They also have experienced coaches, and all coaches have their plans and are very mature. I’ll just check which players are doing well, and they’ll be in the India camp.”

Akash Mishra on Brazil clash and what Indian players must do to defeat Uruguay

Akash Mishra was questioned about the overall mood in the India camp after the loss, to which he replied: “After the loss, we never feel good as players. As footballers, we don’t have to sit down with results. We have a very good upcoming game, so we must prepare for that and do our best.”

When asked if the Indian players were a bit too overly-excited that they were playing against Brazilian players in the last game and if that impacted their performances.

Mishra replied: “I think that you can show the excitement before or after the game. But during the game, in the 90 minutes, there was no behaviour like a fan from the boys. They played really well throughout the 90 minutes. After a 4-0 loss, the mood wasn’t that good, but I feel that once the whistle was gone, the excitement could come up. They saw these players growing up, and when they got to meet them, the excitement came out of them.”

The Mumbai City FC man insists that his side’s focus levels need improvement for them to excel against Uruguay, claiming: “After the Brazil game, I’ve said that I’m a very bad loser. We lost 4-0 and I didn’t feel well at all.  I feel all the boys felt that our performance wasn’t up to the mark, some of our mistakes were very casual. When you play against teams like this, you need to keep utmost focus for 90 minutes and we need to work on that. Uruguay is as good as the other teams, so we must focus for the entire game.”

Finally, Mishra also indicated that getting to be involved in longer national team camps can help the Indian players produce even better performances going forward.

He stated: “The clubs play different tactics, so the prospect of getting more days as the national team camp will help us prepare better and improve our tactical approach. So the longer the camp is, the better it’ll be for the national team.”
