The India football team are poised to face off against Uruguay in an international match after 44 years, when they face off on Tuesday (6 October 2026) at the VYBK Stadium (Kolkata). It was in the 1982 Nehru Cup when these two sides had faced off, and this marks a rematch under very difficult circumstances for the two sides.

For India, there is utmost motivation at trying to end this historic international window with a positive result – be it a draw or a stunning win.

Uruguay, meanwhile, look to add to their winning momentum with a high-scoring win over the Asian side. That is why this upcoming India vs Uruguay clash should be a high-intensity affair, where a few particular key battles can decide which team gets the advantage.

With both teams having influential players in key areas of the pitch, there should be some feisty duels – winning which can allow the player to give a major boost to their team’s hopes of controlling the game. Hence, here we look at some of the key battles that will be held at the India vs Uruguay clash.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta vs Lalengmawia Ralte

India will face a stiff contest in the midfield battle against Uruguay, and it’ll also be the Uruguayan no.10 Giorgian de Arrascaeta who looks to control the key areas for his side.

The Flamengo midfielder was able to get two goal involvements (one goal, one assist) against South Korea and will look to keep that form going against India as well. That puts extra incentive on Indian midfielder Lalengmawia Ralte to put a tight marker on the Uruguayan no.10 to neutralise his threat in the key areas.

Apuia has to be vigilant at closing down the spaces for De Arrascaeta and ensure that the midfielder doesn’t get too much free space to work with in the Indian final third.

Ralte has to be proactive in making crucial tackles and possession recoveries to frustrate his opponents into letting his performance levels drop.

De Arrascaeta, however, has many tricks up his sleeve and will look to be smart with his off-the-ball work and final third delivery to be a major thorn for the hosts – which is why this battle in the midfield could be decisive in giving an advantage to either sides.

Ryan Williams vs Ronald Araújo

Ryan Williams has arguably been the biggest attacking threat for India over their last few friendly games, and it should be much of that in the India vs Uruguay clash as well.

The Bengaluru FC forward has been a breath of fresh air for Khalid Jamil’s side, using his hard-working nature and unpredictability in the attack to trouble even defenders playing in major European leagues! Williams will now be coming up against Liverpool FC player Ronald Araújo, who joined them on a short-term deal from FC Barcelona recently.

Ronald Araújo is a really physical defender, who also boasts admirable pace in being able to track and cover the runs of quick forwards.

Williams will definitely face a tricky battle against Araújo and needs to be particularly smart with his movement to dupe the defender.

Ryan will have to be clever with how he moves around in the transitions to put Ronald Araújo under pressure and be able to get the ball in the danger zones in the final third. Because of Ronald Araújo’s desire to get a clean sheet and Williams’ desperation for more goals, this should be a high-octane duel – winning which can greatly benefit India’s cause.

Darwin Núñez vs Anwar Ali

Anwar Ali will be given the responsibility to deal with Uruguayan forwards.

The Indian backline will have to be at their sturdiest to be able to frustrate this Uruguay, who are heading into this upcoming clash at the back of scoring four past South Korea!

The Uruguayan frontline is poised to be spearheaded by former Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez – who is currently playing in the Saudi Pro League. Darwin Núñez is a player in form, having scored a brace in his last appearance for Uruguay and three goals in the Saudi League so far in the 2026-27 season as well.

Darwin can be an unpredictable threat for defenders because of his clever off-the-ball movement and ability to carry the ball into danger areas.

That is why Anwar Ali will need to be at his absolute best in order to neutralise the threat of the Uruguayan striker.

Ali has a big chance to test his skills against a high-quality striker who has played in the Premier League in the past! Anwar will need to be sharp with his defensive work, tracking the runs of Darwin Núñez and making crucial challenges to frustrate him.

Ali has to be really mobile in moving around his defensive areas and read Uruguay’s movement really well to make important clearances and ensure that Darwin Núñez & co don’t run rampant against the Indian backline.

When will Uruguay play India?

Uruguay will face India on October 6 at the VYBK Stadium in Kolkata.

Who is the head coach of Uruguay?

Diego Forlan is the head coach of Uruguay.
