Panama, a North American team belonging to the CONCACAF confederation, are set to travel to Asia during the September–October 2026 international window, where they will play matches in India and Japan.
A team ranked 44th in the FIFA world rankings and one that featured in the recently concluded 2026 FIFA World Cup would usually be expected to face opponents ranked around them to test themselves at the highest level.
However, the Panama national team are set to face India in Bengaluru for their opening game of the international break, testing themselves against a team ranked 138th in the FIFA world rankings, a difference of almost 95 places between the two nations.
The clash against India is scheduled to take place at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on September 25, 2026, at 7:30 PM IST. Following that, Panama will travel to Japan to participate in the 2026 Kirin Cup Soccer, where they will compete against fellow World Cup nations Japan, Ecuador and New Zealand.
As the clash against India is expected to be a relatively straightforward outing for Panama, at least on paper, it presents an opportunity for them to test new faces. And that’s exactly what the head coach has done with his squad selection.
Panama’s longest-serving head coach, Thomas Christiansen, has announced a 27-member squad, with just 14 players who featured in the 2026 FIFA World Cup retaining their places.
Six players have received their first call-ups to the national team, while three long-serving players, Eric Davis, Alberto Quintero and Anibal Godoy, have retired from international football after making more than 100 appearances each over the last decade or so.

Amir Murillo

Amir Murillo, the most experienced defender in the current national team set-up, is a right-back who plays for Besiktas in the Turkish Super Lig. Murillo is an extremely versatile player who can slot in anywhere across the backline, with right-back and right wingback being his primary positions.
He is a modern full-back who offers effective overlapping runs in the final third and an extremely high work rate up and down the flanks. Murillo is also excellent defensively in 1v1 situations, possessing impressive physical and aerial abilities.
In his 97 appearances for the national team, Amir Murillo has registered more than 20 goal contributions. He has also represented top European clubs such as RSC Anderlecht and Marseille. Murillo featured for the full 90 minutes in all three of Panama’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Carlos Harvey
Carlos Harvey, the orchestrator of the Panama national team in the middle of the park, operates in a defensive midfield role. The midfielder can comfortably slot in as either a center-back or a midfielder, offering valuable flexibility that allows the head coach to maintain a strong tactical shape both in and out of possession.
Playing for Minnesota United in the MLS, Harvey is an imposing presence in the middle of the park, with an exceptional ability to execute clean tackles and win duels to regain possession. Despite being a defensive midfielder, he makes dangerous late runs into the box to score crucial goals while also posing a consistent threat from set-pieces.
Harvey also possesses the ability to strike the ball dangerously from long range and test opposition goalkeepers. He recently scored a brilliant goal from 30 yards out in a friendly against Brazil ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Josue Vergara
While Josue Vergara may not be the most experienced or famous name among this group of players, but the striker certainly remains the most exciting prospect, with many Panama fans eager to see what the youngster can offer in front of goal.
Having impressed with the Panama U-20 national team and recently enjoyed a decent scoring run for KAA Gent in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, head coach Thomas Christiansen has handed the 19-year-old his maiden call-up to the Panama senior team. This season, he has scored four goals, including one against Hibernian FC in the 2026-27 UEFA Conference League qualifiers.
Possessing the profile of a traditional number nine, Vergara excels aerially inside the box, making the most of his 6’5″ frame. He is effective with his hold-up play and is usually very lethal with the chances he receives inside the box.
