Top 5 Tajikistan players to watch out for against India

Tajikistan will host India for two friendlies on June 5 and June 9.

After a disappointing 2026 Unity Cup campaign in London, where the Blue Tigers finished bottom of the four-team tournament after defeats to Jamaica and Zimbabwe, Khalid Jamil’s side now faces another stern challenge. The Indian national team will travel to Tajikistan for a pair of international friendlies against the hosts at the Central Stadium in Hisor.

Tajikistan are currently ranked 103rd in the FIFA World Rankings, 33 places above India, who sit at 136th. The Crowns have already secured qualification for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, an achievement that Khalid Jamil and his players failed to achieve despite being drawn in a comparatively favourable qualification group.

While the odds on paper appear to favour the hosts, Indian fans can draw confidence from the meeting between the two sides just ten months ago. Following the departure of Manolo Marquez, Khalid Jamil’s first assignment as India head coach came at the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup, where his debut match was against Tajikistan.

With most predicting a comfortable victory for the Crowns, Khalid Jamil’s side produced a memorable upset, securing a 2-1 win. Set-piece goals from Sandesh Jhingan and Bheke proved decisive as the Blue Tigers claimed all three points and handed their new coach a perfect start.

This time, however, the task appears even more demanding. India head into the friendlies low on confidence after losing four of their last five matches and will also be without Ryan Williams, their primary attacking threat.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most influential players in the Tajikistan squad who could play a decisive role in determining the outcome of these two encounters.

Akhtam Nazarov (Left Back)

Nazarov is the most experienced player in the current Tajikistan setup and holds the record for the most appearances in the history of the Tajikistan national team, making him the natural choice to wear the captain’s armband. He also led his side against India when the two teams faced off in the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup, starting and captaining the Crowns in that encounter.

At 33 years of age, Nazarov currently represents Vakhsh Bokhtar in the Tajikistan top-flight. Earlier this year, he was part of FC Istiklol’s squad and featured against FC Goa in the AFC Champions League Two. Primarily a left-back, Nazarov is equally comfortable operating as a centre-back thanks to his aerial dominance, positional awareness, and ability to track runners effectively.

While age has somewhat reduced his pace and ability to make frequent overlapping runs down the flank, Nazarov remains a key figure for Tajikistan. His biggest strength lies in the air, where he poses a significant threat from attacking set-pieces. India will need to stay alert to that aspect of his game if they are to keep the veteran defender quiet.

Parvizdzhon Umarbaev (Midfielder)

Having represented Russia at the youth level, Umarbayev switched his international allegiance to Tajikistan in 2015 and has been a mainstay in the national team ever since his U-23 days. The 31-year-old midfielder currently plays for Lokomotiv Plovdiv in Bulgaria, returning to the club last season after previously spending six years there between 2016 and 2022.

Umarbayev is the heartbeat of Tajikistan’s midfield, most commonly operating as a box-to-box midfielder but equally capable of playing in defensive or attacking midfield roles, positions he is well accustomed to at the club level. He arrives for these friendlies on the back of a solid domestic campaign, having registered 12 goal contributions in 36 appearances this season.

Renowned for his technical quality and set-piece expertise, Umarbayev is Tajikistan’s primary creative outlet in midfield. He possesses the technique and passing abilities to unlock opposition defences with accurate balls through the lines, while his delivery from corners and free kicks consistently poses a threat. Coupled with his low centre of gravity and excellent ball control, he is highly press-resistant, capable of turning away from challenges and retaining possession under pressure with remarkable ease.

Ehson Pandzhshanbe (Midfielder)

Ehson, who currently plays for Terengganu FC in the Malaysian top flight, was also part of FC Istiklol’s squad during the group stage of the 2025/26 AFC Champions League Two. He featured in both matches against FC Goa and played an important role in helping his side secure positive results.

Much like Umarbayev, Ehson is a technically gifted midfielder who is comfortable using both feet, making him a difficult player for opposition players to predict and stop. His intelligence running off the ball is one of his biggest strengths, as he constantly scans for pockets of space and rarely remains rooted in his position. From his midfield role, he frequently drifts into wider areas, exploiting gaps and creating opportunities in attack.

Another notable aspect of Ehson’s game is his willingness to shoot from distance. He is never hesitant to test the goalkeeper from outside the box, and India’s defenders and goalkeeper will need to remain alert and ensure that he is not afforded too much time or space around the edge of the penalty area. He finished the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers with two goals and two assists in six games.

Shervoni Mabatshoev (Left Winger)

At just 25 years of age, Mabatshoev is already the joint third-highest goal scorer in the history of the Tajikistan national team, having found the net 13 times in 39 appearances. Like Ekhson, he currently plies his trade for Terengganu FC in the Malaysian topflight and has established himself as one of the most important attacking players in the Tajikistan setup.

Mabatshoev possesses one of the rarer profiles in modern football. Naturally ambidextrous, he is equally comfortable using either foot and offers tremendous versatility across the frontline. While he primarily operates as a winger, he is capable of playing anywhere in attack, providing head coach Igor Angelovski with valuable tactical flexibility in the final third. His ability to switch positions during games allows Tajikistan to create unpredictable attacking patterns and makes it difficult for opposition defences to track his runs.

One of Mabatshoev’s biggest strengths is his clinical finishing. He is a reliable goalscoring outlet and a player Tajikistan can depend on to convert chances in key moments. However, his creative output and defensive contribution when tracking back are not always consistent. He also enjoyed an outstanding 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign, finishing with six goals in six matches.

Shahrom Samiev (Striker)

The team’s primary goalscoring threat, Shakhrom Samiev, was on the scoresheet when India and Tajikistan last met in the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup, netting the Crowns’ only goal of the match. The striker currently plays for Iraq Stars League side Al-Karma SC, where he endured a difficult campaign, making just ten appearances, mostly from the bench and finishing the season without finding the back of the net.

Despite his recent struggles at the club level, Samiev remains one of the most important attacking players for the Tajikistan national team and has consistently delivered when called upon by his country. The 29-year-old has scored 12 goals in 46 appearances for Tajikistan and arrives in good form, having found the net four times in his last seven outings for the national side.

Standing at nearly 6’1″, Samiev’s biggest strengths lie in his physicality and aerial ability. While he is not particularly known for his dribbling or playmaking, he thrives as a traditional number nine, operating inside the penalty area and constantly looking to exploit spaces between defenders. His intelligent movement off the ball, combined with his ability to attack crosses and win aerial duels, makes him a dangerous presence in the box.
