Malaysia’s senior national football team, known as Harimau Malaya, which translates to Malayan Tigers in English, first played their international match against Thailand in the 1964 Summer Olympics men’s qualification competition. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The team has won two Asian Games bronze medals, one in Jakarta in 1962 and another in Tehran in 1974. Malaysia also claimed the AFF Championship title in 2010, defeating the Indonesia national football team. In the two-legged final, Malaysia emerged victorious with a 4-2 aggregate score.
The Merdeka Tournament is one of the most prestigious competitions organized by Malaysia to commemorate the nation’s Independence Day. The host team holds the record for the most titles in this tournament, winning it 13 times since its inception in 1958.

5. Paulo Josue and Stuart Wilkin (5 goals)
Both Malaysian players have five goals each to their names. Paulo Josue scored five goals and registered one assist, while Stuart Wilkin also netted five goals.
Paulo scored his last international goal against the Chinese Taipei football team on June 11th. Currently playing for Kuala Lumpur City F.C., he has scored 13 goals and registered three assists across all competitions. He is in excellent goal-scoring form, having netted four times in his last three appearances in the Malaysia Super League.
Stuart Wilkin featured in the last international game between the two countries. He plays club football for Sabah FC as a midfielder and has scored three goals this season in the Malaysia Super League.
4. Arif Aiman (7 goals)
The right winger has contributed to 16 goals for his nation, scoring seven and assisting in nine in his 30 appearances from the national side.
The 22-year-old plays club football for Johor Darul Ta’zim F.C., where he has scored 11 goals in the season of Malaysia Super League. Primarily operating on the right side, Arif is an excellent playmaker, having provided eight assists this season.
Arif Aiman won the Footballer of the Year award in three consecutive years, 2021,22 and 2023. Along with winning the Malaysia Cup in 2022 with his club Johor Darul Ta’zim F.C., he also won the Malasyian Championship three times, the Malasyian FA Cup three times, and the Malasyian Super Cup two times.
3. Akhyar Rashid (10 goals)
One of the most experienced footballers in the Malaysian squad, Akhyar Rashid has played 49 games for the nation, scoring ten goals and providing eleven assists. However, the Terengganu FC center forward has had a quiet domestic season, with just one goal and one assist in the Malaysia Super League 2024-25.
2. Syafiq Ahmad (10 goals)
Syafiq Ahmad is one of the highest scorers in the current Malaysia squad. In 38 appearances for the national side, he has scored ten goals and registered five assists.
However, the 25-year-old, center forward is not a regular starter for the national team. His last international goal came against Bangladesh on 14th June 2024. This season, he has scored two goals in 12 matches for his club Kedah Darul Aman F.C.
1. Safawi Rasid (22 goals)
Safawi Rasid, 27 years old, has appeared 61 times for the national team, scoring 22 goals, making him the highest active goal scorer in the squad. He has two international goals this year against the Philippines and Chinese Taipei.
This season, he has scored seven goals and provided two assists in all competitions while playing club football for Terengganu FC. In all competitions, he scored forty goals and provided nineteen assists for a different club.
