India has played twice against Jamaica before

The India men’s football team under the leadership of head coach Khalid Jamil is all set to participate in the Unity Cup Challenge 2026 from May 26 to May 30 in UK.

The premier international football tournament celebrating AfroCentric and global diaspora communities is officially returning to its historic home. In this edition of the Unity Cup the team’s participating are Nigeria, Jamaica, India and Zimbabwe.

The tournament will take place from May 26 to May 30 at the hallowed turf of The Valley, home to Charlton Athletic FC

India will take on Jamaica on May 27; this will be the first time after 24 years that the Indian team travels to UK to play a football match. The Indian team has faced both Jamaica and Zimbabwe before, but they have never played a match against Nigeria.

Let us take a look at how India has performed against these sides so far before taking them on in the Unity Cup 2026.

India vs Jamaica

The team that India is going to face in the Unity Cup 2026 is perhaps the team that India has faced most times compared to other teams participating in the tournament. India played Jamaica twice under the leadership of head coach Constantine back in 2002 in friendly matches.

29 August 2002

Venue: Vicarage Road, Watford, England

The Indian team played this match during India’s tour of England ahead of the 2002 Asian games under Stephen Constantine, the match ended with a scoreline of 3-0 in favour of the Jamaicans with the help of goals from Ricardo Gardner – 37’, Aaron Lawrence (penalty) – 62’ and Ricardo Fuller – 79’.

Despite the scoreline the Indian team gave a tough fight to the Jamaicans in the midfield and managed to get good positives out of the game.

1 September 2002

Venue: Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton, England

This match was a better result for the Blue Tigers as they managed to get a 0-0 draw against Jamaica. After the 3-0 loss, Constantine made a few changes, and India came out with much better defensive discipline.

The team stayed compact, worked hard off the ball, and frustrated Jamaica throughout the game.

The result was seen as a very positive one, especially because Jamaica were ranked significantly higher at the time.

India vs Zimbabwe

29 October 2003

Venue: Hyderabad, India

India has faced Zimbabwe just once before, in the semi-final of the 2003 Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad. In what turned out to be a thrilling high-scoring encounter, India emerged victorious with a 5-3 win to book their place in the final.

The Blue Tigers were powered by brilliant braces from I. M. Vijayan and Bhaichung Bhutia, while Renedy Singh also got on the scoresheet.

After conceding early, India responded strongly and took control of the game, although Zimbabwe mounted a late fightback to make it a tense finish. It remains one of the most memorable knockout victories for the Indian men’s team.
