Chennaiyin FC’s summer arrivals have been training hard to show they mean business.
Chennaiyin FC made waves in the summer transfer window ahead of the Indian Super League(ISL) 2024-25. With strong additions to their foreign and national contingents, Owen Coyle has ensured that the Marina Machans have dependable squad depth for the entirety of the season.
The attackers’ department has, in particular, received an insane boost with the additions of ISL stalwart strikers Wilmar Jordan and Daniel Chima Chukwu. To top it off, they have acquired exciting youngsters like SAFF U-20 Championship 2022 topscorer Gurkirat Singh and Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s derby hattrick-hero Kiyan Nassiri.
Centre-back Ryan Edwards and winger Vincy Barretto were spotted enjoying themselves alongside these players but were also seen putting in a hard shift on the training session video that Chennaiyin FC posted on their social media handles.
Owen Coyle’s legendary status among the Marina Machans’ faithful has been exalted after the Scottish tactician propelled them to a fourth-placed finish in ISL 2019-20.
Although they just qualified for the playoffs, Chennaiyin FC had an impressive run, falling short of the trophy after a 3-1 loss to Atletico De Kolkata in the finals.
The mentor is now back at the club, and last season he took them to the playoffs once again. Despite losing to Manolo Marquez’s FC Goa in the playoffs with a one-sided goal margin, the club’s management trusts the coach’s ability to rebuild the side and turn them into title contenders.
Chennaiyin also sent their younger side for the ongoing Durand Cup 2024 but they couldn’t make it out of the group stages. They did however manage one win as they beat Assam Rifles 2-1 in their first game.
Vincy Barretto scored in their loss to Jamshedpur FC but Coyle will be delighted to have the winger brimming with confidence ahead of the season.
The Chennai outfit has won two ISL titles so far but none in the ISL League Winners’ Shield era. They won their first piece of silverware as they won ISL 2014-15 and then repeated the feat in ISL 2017-18.
With one of their most proficient managers, they will be hoping to get their hands on the league double and the Super Cup afterward.
