The Aussie striker helped the Mariners to a thumping victory as they rose to the top of Group A in Durand Cup.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant cruised to a 6-0 win over Indian Air Force FT at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan on Thursday in Durand Cup 2024. Their staggering goal difference took them to the top of their group, dethroning rivals East Bengal.
The Mariners were expected to be fluid in transitioning from defense and attack as Jose Molina made minor changes to their Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 formation, and went with a 3-4-1-2.
Jason Cummings got the show started as Mohammad Aqib’s mispass was intercepted by Sahal Abdul Samad and the twinkle-toed midfielder took no more than one touch to tee up the striker who finished deftly.
Mohun Bagan continued their barrage with new signing Tom Aldred turning in the rebound from Suhail Bhat’s header off a Liston Colaco freekick after the forward was brought down near the box.
Liston got on the scoresheet next as he collected Sahal’s threaded pass and blasted his shot into the roof of the Airmen’s net.
After emerging from the dugouts after the break, Molina’s men had no intention of slowing down. In the 65th minute, Ashish Rai’s cross caused a problem in the box and Liston capitalized on it to set up Anirudh Thapa outside the box. The midfielder struck the ball with poetic grace as it swerved and dipped into the near post.
Cummings was revitalized in the 75th minute again as Sahal picked out Manvir Singh inside the box and the forward released the Socceroos attacker with a quick pass.
He raced a yard and dispatched his strike into the bottom corner effortlessly as Mohun Bagan went 5-0 up.
In stoppage time, the striker turned provider as he gave the fans a quick glimpse into his highly potent partnership with another new signing, Greg Stewart.
The Scotsman played a one-two with Cummings as he glided into the box and finished through the legs of Aman Das in signature fashion.
Mohun Bagan’s win meant they are on level terms with East Bengal despite bettering them in terms of goal difference. The upcoming Kolkata Derby will be a fiery battle, as a result, with everything at stake for both sides.
