India vs Uruguay - What happened last time these two nations played?

Uruguay are ranked 20th in FIFA world rankings.

In a complete turn of events in Indian Football, the Blue Tigers, who have been struggling against Asian teams and even sides around them in the FIFA rankings, have suddenly found themselves scheduled to play three high-profile friendlies against nations ranked significantly higher than them during the September-October FIFA window.

Khalid Jamil’s side will begin the campaign against Panama on September 26th in Bengaluru before travelling to Kolkata to face two of South America’s biggest nations.

They will take on Brazil on October 3rd before facing Uruguay on October 6th, with both games scheduled to take place at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium.

The series of friendlies comes at a crucial time for Indian Football, with the Blue Tigers set to be tested heavily against three teams that featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. India, meanwhile, are languishing at 138th in the FIFA rankings and have also failed to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup.

Further defeats in these three games could potentially mean India have to enter the first round of the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Nevertheless, these games could provide a valuable learning experience for the Blue Tigers, as playing against teams significantly above their current level could help the players improve ahead of the upcoming World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers.

While the clash against Uruguay will also see the return of Diego Forlan to India following his stint with Mumbai City FC, one question remains on the minds of Indian football fans: have India and Uruguay ever faced each other before, or will this be the first-ever meeting between the two nations?

Let’s find out if these two sides have met in the past and, if so, what happened in that game. Did the Blue Tigers manage to surprise Uruguay, or did La Celeste comfortably get past the Blue Tigers? Let’s take a look.

While many online have mistaken the clash between India and Uruguay in the 2001 Sahara Cup at the JLN Stadium in Kochi as the last meeting between the two nations, it is important to note that Uruguay’s second-string side featured in that competition rather than their senior national team. India lost that game 3-0 and were eventually knocked out of the group stages.

There has been only one meeting between the first-string senior teams of India and Uruguay, and that came during the 1982 Nehru Cup in Kolkata. Hosts India, who had started the tournament with a win and a draw, came into the clash against Uruguay after suffering a defeat to Italy Olympic in their previous game.

Uruguay made a brilliant start to the game, scoring twice inside the opening 25 minutes, with Jorge Da Silva grabbing both goals. Manas Bhattacharjee then restored hope amongst the home fans by pulling one back before half-time, giving the Blues a chance heading into the second half.

India pushed for an equalizer after the break, but Mario Saralegui restored Uruguay’s two-goal advantage in the 70th minute to seal a 3-1 victory for La Celeste. The defeat ended India’s hopes of reaching the final, while Uruguay finished top of the group and eventually went on to lift the trophy after defeating China 2-0 in the final.

So, when India takes on Uruguay on October 6th, they will be looking to rewrite history. Can the Blue Tigers pull off something similar to what happened in 1982, or perhaps go one step further and secure a draw or even a historic win?

Even scoring a goal against a team of Uruguay’s caliber could provide a huge morale boost for both the players and the fans, given the current state of the sport in the country.

When is the clash between India and Uruguay scheduled?

The Blue Tigers will face Uruguay on October 6th at the Salt Lake Stadium.

Who is the head coach of the Uruguay NT?

Former Mumbai City FC striker and ISL marquee player Diego Forlan is the head coach of the Uruguay NT.
