India run out of answers as Russia turn a tight half into a rout

Blue Tigresses run out of answers.

A new look at the Indian women’s national team held their own for much of the first half before conceding a 0-4 defeat to Russia in the first of two international friendlies at the rain-soaked Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

Russia, ranked 27th, arrived with the ranking, the size and the swagger. The Blue Tigresses, ranked 69th and missing out key players, arrived with belief. For 45 minutes, that was almost enough. Then the second half happened, and it finished 4-0.

Head coach Crispin Chettri used the occasion to test his emerging players, handing international debuts to Babysana Devi Thingbaijam, Malati Munda, Cindy Colney, Shubhangi Singh, Dhurga Perumal and Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam.

Russia’s Physical Edge Set the Terms Before The Blue Tigresses Could Breathe

From the first whistle, Russia leaned on The Blue Tigresses with pace and bodies, winning the first contact and the second ball. India took time to settle, and that early pressure shaped the whole evening.

Even as the hosts grew into the contest, the Russians’ strength worked both ways. It let them win possession back high up the pitch, and it made them hard to shift when India tried to build.

Sheina Iana Ran the Midfield and Made Everything Click

If Russia had a heartbeat, it was Sheina Iana. She dominated the central duels, won the scraps in the middle and turned them straight into attacks. When there was no pass on, she shot from distance, and those shots from range kept India’s back line stepping out and the crowd holding its breath.

The Blue Tigresses never found a midfielder to match her, and her efforts finally paid off as she scored to give Russia their much-deserved lead just before the halftime whistle.

The Petukhova Substitution Broke the Game Open

Trailing by a single goal at the break, Crispin Chettri’s side had earned some belief. Then, in the 60th minute, Russia sent on Petukhova Kira, and she found the gaps in India’s defensive line almost at once. Two quick goals followed, and the contest was over as a competition.

She kept stretching the Indian defence for the rest of the match, and Russia added a fourth courtesy to Iana Svistunova. India’s shape, stretched all night, finally gave way after an hour of chasing.

The Blue Tigresses Held Firm for 45 Minutes, Then the Gaps Showed

The first half was India’s best argument. Keeping a far higher-ranked side to a one-goal lead was disciplined work. But Russia stayed a step ahead throughout, and the second half exposed why.

Missing key players left India short of options, Russia’s technical and physical edge wore the defence down, and communication between the Indian players broke down in the closing stages. Those gaps showed as the Russians found space again and again.

Crispin Chettri’s side fight deserves credit. Closing the distance to opponents ranked 42 places above them, though, will take more than a good first half. India will be back to take on Russia again on October 11.
