The tactician who was previously assistant of the national team has taken over the reigns after his predecessor Luis Enrique stepped down for personal reasons.

The Spanish National team announced that Luis Enrique would step down and head coach, citing personal reasons. Enrique's long standing right hand, Robert Moreno was announced as his replacement in a daring move by the Spanish FA.

Moreno will be stepping into his first full time managerial role, without any prior experience as a player. However, the Spaniard has spent many years under the tutelage of his predecessor and has watched him nurture some of the best players in the world.

We at Khel Now, give you a closer look at the man who will be taking control of La Rojas.

Career in Football:

Born on 19th September 1977, the Spaniard never got his career as a player going. However, his passion lay in coaching, beginning his managerial career at the tender age of 16, with La Florida's Alevin side.

Moreno's career in the big time began in the 2010/2011 season as a scout with Barcelona. He was soon snapped up by then Roma manager, Luis Enrique as his assistant. Moreno would then follow Enrique to Celta Vigo, back to Barcelona and eventually to the Spanish national team.

Moreno was put in charge of three games in Enrique's absence, winning all three and scoring eight goals in the process.

When questioned about his lack of experience, the Spaniard insisted that that was not the case and that his nine years beside Luis Enrique gave him the tools he needed to carry out the job.

“I do have experience. I’ve been with Luis for nine years, watching him work with the top players in the world,” he said.

“I’m sure we’ll do a great job although I can’t promise results. If we win the European Championship no-one will remember whether or not I had experience.”

What does he bring to the side?

More than anything else, Moreno will bring a stability to a Spanish side that has been rocked in the last 12 months by multiple managerial changes. Moreno derives all his managerial know how from Enrique and will be able to make the transition a smooth one and continue the work that his predecessor began.

Moreno has observed Enrique deal with some of the world's best talents and has without a doubt learned the ways of handling a squad.

In the three games he handled, the side showed off an attacking prowess and a defensive stability that Spanish sides have lacked in recent years which can only be a good sign with the Euros on the Horizon.

Moreno knows that he will have several tough calls to make in the near future, with several stars reaching the end of their careers.

“We know that we won’t please everyone, but we can’t control that. All we can do is offer to work hard with the players and help them, as they are the ones that will determine whether we win or lose.”

Why him?

The president of the Spanish FA, Luis Rubiales revealed that following Enrique's departure, the entire coaching staff offered to leave as well but the FA felt that it was imperative that the structure in place remained strong and for that to take place, the current team were the best option. "The results will tell us whether we made the right choice or not, but all the players identify with the coaching staff and it's the best decision for the federation.", said Rubiales.

Moreno has a massive job on his hands if he is to bring Spain back to their former glory. It remains to be seen if the 42-year-old is ready to take the step up to the big time.
