The Gaurs have decided to sever ties with the Spanish tactician after a three-year association.
In a shocking turn of events, sources have confirmed to Khel Now that FC Goa have parted ways with head coach Sergio Lobera.
The tactician was in his third season at the club, with the side involved in a three-way battle for the top position in the Indian Super League.
Sources close to the development have confirmed that the manager was served a termination notice by the club. While footballing matters and performances on the field remained on the up, differences with the club’s hierarchy are understood to be the reason for his dismissal.
The other members of Lobera’s backroom staff have followed the Spaniard out of the door. The Gaurs’ head of youth development Derrick Pereira has taken charge of the coaching staff on an interim basis.
Sergio Lobera guided the Gaurs to a Super Cup triumph last year and his team finished as runner-ups in the ISL as well.
Interestingly, FC Goa are currently sitting atop the league table with 30 points to their name and face a tough challenge by close rivals in ATK and Bengaluru FC. Therefore, the timing of the sacking may not sit well with loyal supporters of the club. This could also send their current campaign into a state of flux and cause ramifications on the field.
It is learnt that the club have already commenced their search for a new head coach and have approached three of Lobera’s contemporaries in the league. It will be interesting as to what steps the club will take in the forthcoming days and how will the fallout of this decision affect the players’ mindset. Certainly, it could make or break FC Goa’s current season.
More to follow….
