ATK Mohun Bagan have announced their 27-man squad for the upcoming season of the Indian Super League (ISL). The squad has a good blend of experienced foreigners and young domestic players, with more than a couple of players from the reserves also being included. The Antonio Lopez Habas managed side were the first to start training in Goa and are now all focused on preparations for the season's curtain-raiser against Kerala Blasters.
The Green and Maroons' backline will see a complete transformation with the arrival of Tiri, Sandesh Jhingan and Subhasish Bose. The Mariners could start in a 4-4-2 formation with Tiri and Jhingan playing the roles of centre-backs, along with Pritam Kotal and Bose as full-backs.
The Kolkata giants were clinical from set-pieces last season and are expected to showcase the same consistency this time around. With options at hand Habas is also making last season's Emerging Player of the Year Sumit Rathi play alongside Jhingan. In midfield Prabir Das is expected to be on the wing, putting deliveries into the final third.
Habas is known for choosing players based on their recent form and performances, instead of their names. The ISL giants will play a friendly against FC Goa on 14th November, a game that will be followed by the season opener against the Blasters.
The new campaign will also bring the added challenge of continental football. Habas' men have qualified for the group stage of the AFC Cup and on paper, at least, they do seem to have the strength in depth in the squad to go deep in the completion. Nonetheless, playing in two competitions in a condensed season, with the complications of the COVID-19 pandemic, will prove a fine balancing act.
