The Spaniard has scored five goals in four games to begin the season.
The Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 season might be just four games old for FC Goa, but Igor Angulo has already proved his class. The Spaniard has provided the Midas touch to the Gaurs’ attack, plundering five goals in his very first four games in FC Goa colours.
Angulo put his skills on display again against Kerala on Sunday. His returns – a second brace of the season helping FC Goa back into the top 4 and cementing his place at the top of ISL Golden Boot race, two clear of his nearest rival.
Speaking after the Gaurs’ first win of the season, the 36-year-old remarked that striking first against the Blasters was key for the Gaurs and the importance of the three points for the psyche of the team.
“We controlled the game as always. We were precise with our work in the final third. Except for that, there wasn’t anything special (red cards, penalties, etc) that was different,” said Angulo. “The first goal really made a difference. We were able to score first. That was the key."
“(The win was) Essential. It was not just the three points. The performance, the result gives us more confidence in ourselves and realise us realise that we are the right front.
“This season, performances and results like these are very important. Being away from the fans and everything, these nights help in lifting the spirits and bringing smiles to faces.
Can beat any team
The Spaniard wants to use the first win as a springboard for the future. And is optimistic that the best days for the team, are yet to come – a team that he feels can beat anyone in the league.
“We’re getting better every day. We are working on the details and the more we train, the better we know each other. As for me, I’m a striker, I have to score goals, that’s what I did against Kerala” added Angulo.
“That is the best way I can help the team. And I am focused to keep working hard on that every single day to keep helping the team.”
“We’re always more focused on ourselves than in the opponent. We know that if we’re at 100% we can win every single game in this league. Yesterday we proved it.”
Angulo’s haul of five goals in four is the highest for any player to start his career in FC Goa colours barring Ferran Corominas. Coro started off his days as a Gaur with an even bigger bang – bagging seven goals in his first four games.
