Kerala Blasters sign Denechandra Meitei on year-long deal from TRAU FC
The defender played for TRAU FC in the I-League last season.
Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Kerala Blasters have completed the signing of Denechandra Meitei. The 26-year-old will join the club on an initial one-year contract, with an option to extend it by another three, if all goes well for him in the upcoming 2020-21 ISL season.
Denechandra Meitei commenced his professional career at Pune FC, but failed to make it into the first-team. The Manipuri defender joined Churchill Brothers in 2017 and that season was a breakthrough year for the left-back in the I-League. He made 15 appearances for the Red Machines in that campaign.
Meitei then joined NEROCA FC and played a few matches there, before moving to their arch-rivals TRAU FC this season. The 26-year old impressed a lot of people in this season's I-League, plying his trade for a relegation threatened side.
"Kerala Blasters have completed the signing. He will join them initially on a one-year contract worth ₹15 lacs - but if he impresses, the club can activate a clause that has been inserted into the deal, to extend his term by another three years," a source close to the developments informed Khel Now.
"If the contract-extension clause is activated, he will also be eligible for an increment of ₹5 lacs in wages each year," the source added. It has also been revealed that the Yellow Army signed the left-back in a bid to provide competition for Jessel Carneiro, who recently signed a three-year contract extension himself.

Earlier Kerala Blasters also signed Meitei's teammate Sandeep Singh from TRAU, who also impressed with his consistent performances in the last I-League. Carneiro is the first-choice for the Blasters at left-back, but with new head coach Kibu Vicuna coming in, Meitei will also get his chances to impress the Spanish tactician.
