New ATKMB coach Juan Ferrando, speaks about his new challenge

Kolkata-based side ATK Mohun Bagan have appointed ex-FC Goa head coach Juan Ferrando as their new man at the helm. Antonio Lopez Habas and the club parted ways on 18th December, two days after which the new appointment was made. Ferrando’s resume includes guiding FC Goa to the Indian Super League 2020-21 final and to the AFC Champions League.

The Gaurs, under Ferrando, weren’t having the best start to a season, having lost three of their six games. The situation was similar with Habas at ATKMB. Now, the new head coach will have an experienced set of players to work with and hope to turn the tide for the club.

Message for FC Goa fans

The fans of the Goan team had grown to like Juan Ferrando, especially after his heroics during the last campaign. “I wish all the best to them. I love the people and I am happy that I got an opportunity to work with FC Goa,” Juan said as a parting message for the fans.

On joining ATK Mohun Bagan

The freshly-appointed coach was asked about his reasons for joining ATKMB, but Ferrando did not reveal much. “Of course, there are some reasons, but I prefer to explain them to the players, the owners and the sporting director. The only important thing for me now is to work for this club,” Ferrando reiterated.

Changing football philosophy

The Spaniard was synonymous with possession-based football during his time at FC Goa. It is natural that a coach may have to change his style of play to suit the kind of players available.

“Yes, of course. We will try to find a good style and help the players because it is a very good squad. It is necessary to change some things regarding mentality, but it’ll be difficult as I haven’t had much time,” Ferrando concluded.
