The defender played 11 matches for the Highlanders in the 2020-21 season.
Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Northeast United have handed a one-year extension to defender Provat Lakra ahead of the 2021-22 season, Khel Now can confirm. Lakra was one of Northeast United’s standout performers in the season gone by.
“Provat Lakra and Northeast United have agreed terms over a contract renewal,” a source close to developments told Khel Now. Lakra, 24, will hence be a part of the Highlanders’ squad for the fourth consecutive season.

His football journey so far
Lakra started his football journey at the age of 20 with his home town club United Sports in the Calcutta Football League (CFL). Soon afterwards, Pathachakra snapped up the bright prospect on a five-year deal. The following season in 2017, they sent him out on loan to I-league outfit Gokulam Kerala FC.
The Kalyani born left-back exceeded expectations there, featuring in 15 league games for the Malabarians and giving a good account of himself. And post the 2017-18 I-League campaign, Northeast United came calling. The Highlanders signed him for an undisclosed transfer fee from his parent club ahead of the 2018-19 season.
In his debut ISL campaign, Lakra featured in six games before a season-ending injury. His numbers did not increase the following season either as he suffered yet another major injury. However, the tables turned last season as he recorded a game time of 549 minutes across 11 matches. NEUFC made it to the playoffs as well. Overall in ISL 2020-21, Lakra registered 17 tackles and interceptions each, 24 clearances and six blocks.

His extension comes in as a good news for the Highlanders as he is a very versatile full-back. The 24-year-old’s pin-point crossing, pace and ability to play on either flanks and take on defenders comes in as an added advantage.
Northeast United FC’s preparations ahead of the 2021-22 season
The Highlanders are all set rope in Spanish midfielder Hernan Santana and Sehnaj Singh and have extended Khassa Camara’s contract, as reported earlier by Khel Now. The club has also signed Joe Zoherliana, Jestin George, Mathias Coureur and Mohammed Irshad under the guidance of Khalid Jamil who is set to continue as head coach.
